Prevention of Sexual Harassment • Sexual Harassment Defined: • Unwanted, repeated verbal comments, printed materials, gestures or physical conduct of a sexual nature, which are offensive to a “reasonable person.” • Employees have the right to a work environment free from sexual harassment – overt or implied • Covers anyone – not just the intended recipient – who may be offended. Pay attention to your surroundings. Two Types of Sexual Harassment • Quid pro Quo: • Implicitly/explicitly a term/condition of employment • Usually involves supervisor – subordinate relationship, e.g., “I’ll send you on this fire assignment/detail if …” • Hostile Work Environment: work environment is so offensive as to distract the person from being able to work, e.g., lewd comments, jokes, pictures, “elevator eyes.” Sexual Misconduct • Unwanted verbal comments, printed materials, gestures or physical conduct of a sexual nature, which are offensive to a “reasonable person.” • May not be repetitive – but still unwanted. What to do? • Confront the individual (not required – encouraged) • Report to your supervisor/go up your chain of command Bottom Line • On or off duty conduct that adversely reflects on the National Park Service is unacceptable – and may be the basis for corrective action.
