It was the general perspective of the Council that the image could be viewed in a number of ways and may not be a hate/bias incident. In light of the fact that Columbus Day is on Monday, this may be a political statement about the conquistadors' and frontiersmen's genocide of Native Americans, 3 statement of logo which is viewed as insensitive to the existence of Native Americans in New Mexico's history or it could also present the perspective that UNM is built over the burial graves of Native Americans. They felt that this incident provides an opportunity to unpack the many perspectives, feelings and emotions that may surround this and other incidents. Dr. Glenabah Martinez will be leading the efforts to organize a forum that will provide an opportunity for deeper reflection by university faculty, staff and students. In order to be thoughtfully constructed, the forum will not be held immediately, but will be held with enough time to encourage participation. I will keep you posted. To Whom It May Concern, Good morning, I am writing to the University of New Mexico in regards to a post I came by on Facebook made aware by a friend of mine which exempli?ed UNM and the Conquistadors of Spain and the US. Let me point out and remind you that the ?land? which you live on was ?rst inhabited Native Americans of North and South America. Your ancestors made a great mistake of misunderstanding that Spain or the US. was here And, it was not conquered without In the right mind, I suggest you as prestigious university, act on this kind of issue. I have a right to speak and call you out on your mistake. Make it right or let this stain the white sheets of UNM forever. Best regards, ?gs; 'x . ?k ?ogmw gm" ?r 1? Is there a way that I can petition that AC not be a question writer for the comprehensives? It would be Worked with Ben at OEO. highly unfair to have a question asked from someone who teaches a class that you are being asked not to take. That makes two times in less than one year at UNM that I have been asked to not enter a class I needed. Add this to the prior discrimination against me by DW, and not being allowed to use the TA's office which other people who are not TA's have had access to, it seems fair to say The Spanish & Portuguese Department has offered me less access to the resources necessary. Given I have done nothing but be nice and try my hardest, in the midst of difficult times and sickness, all of this seems highly unfair. In addition I should not feel like the chair is stalking me online on his free time. Neither professor has agreed even to a mediation with me. I wasn't given access to Spanport until L brought it up well into the second semester, I wasn't even offered a mentor until almost the end of the first year. Sexual Orientation I am the Department Chair. A gay-identified male faculty member reported to me, providing a photo, that he was working in his new office and left a couple of times Referred to OEO to visit the water fountain. When he returned after one trip out, he found a large marking on the inside of his office window adjacent to the door, placed so anyone passing by could see it, a very large penis showing also streams of ejaculate. The drawing was approx 20 inches in height X 5 inches in width (estimate). The faculty member whose window was defaced was with another faculty member at the time who also witnessed this development and encouraged him to report it to me. The victim reported this event to me via email at 5:37 p.m. I contacted him via cell phone immediately to discuss the event. I went to the site the next morning and witnessed, myself, this marking. The following morning another employee working in the area setting up computers saw the marking and offered to help remove it as he had monitor cleaning supplies available. I examined the rest of the offices and work space and saw no evidence of any defacement of any other offices or property in the area, only the victim's office. The IT staff member and I removed the marking as the faculty member had indicated to me he wanted it removed before anyone else could see it. He had agreed to leave it for me to inspect on Sat morning, however, so I arrived early to see it myself. The drawing was on frosted glass which marks fairly easily with the oils on person's skin/finger. The marking was difficult to remove, however, but I could not tell what it was made with. There is still some evidence available of the marking, but it is not detectable to anyone passing by, which the faculty victim requested to avoid further victimization and attention. I have notified the Dean, and the two of us have been in contact with HR at the HSC, UNM OEO, and I contacted the Diversity and Inclusion office of the HSC. The victim asks not to have to be interrogated any more than necessary but gave me his approval to report and proceed as the Dean and I saw fit. I want to be very sensitive to protecting him from further trauma and having to relive this situation, but also believe the university needs to know this happened and to take appropriate action to create a safe environment for everyone who works here. I am happy to discuss this with your office or other UNM officials as needed. 9/29/2014 9/29/2014 PT A-Student Health Parking, and Color/Race; Parking lot in front of Medical Zimmerman Condition I have been harrassed by the parking transportation department. When I park on campus, I have been asked to show the picture on my handicap placard on occasion and once the officer saw my picture he apologized and said people where abusing placards. Then today I got ticket that states unable to read handicap permit date, when the officers on campus have seen my placard up close and personal on several occasions when, I have taken it out of the window to show them my picture. Why I am being singaled out for violation is bias. I park on campus everyday and I don't appreciate being treated like a suspect. Not hate/bias incident 10/7/2014 10/8/2014 PA Pearl Hall Bulletin Board An altered copy of the University of New Mexico Seal was found on a bulletin board in Pearl Hall. It contained the University Seal with bones and skulls and the words "What Indians?" written across the Seal. It was reported that the rendering was offensive and assumed that it was targeting Native American students indicating that they did not belong at UNM. The incident was reported to the Dean of Architecture and PLanning, Geraldine Isais Forbes, Dean of Students, Tomas Aguirre, Director of American Indian Student Services, Pamela Agoyo and VP, Equity and Inclusion, Jozi De Leon. Dr. De Leon took the image before the Diversity Council for their interpretation of the drawing since there are Native American as well as other faculty of color who serve on the Diversity Council. The Diversity Council interpreted the rendering as a political statement about the University Seal and the lack of representation of Native Americans since it contains a frontiersman and conquistadors. In addition, they felt that the conquistador and frontiersman represented a period of genocide of Native Americans in NM. No suspect was identified in placing the seal on the bulletin board. Emails were exchanged and discussions were held. The image called into question in this report later was claimed by an individual who is a member of the Red Nation. He explained the the University Seal was offensive because as institution serving Native Americans, the Seal was offensive in that it included images that were reminders of genocide of Native Americans. Furthermore, Native Americans were non-existent in the university seal. This has continued to be voiced and the institution is presently examining whether it will change the University seal. Several forums are being held and by November a recommendation will be made to the Board of Regents. 3/26/2015 3/26/2015 NM Outside of the SUB in the Gender; Sexual courtyard area near the water orientation; fountain spousal affiliation; ancestry/nation al origin Color/Race Starting Tuesday, March 24, 2015, three older individuals enter UNM grounds and began speaking about their religious belief in an attempt to "save" us as one of the three individuals stated. There were two women, one who responds to B, and a man who responds to J. During there speaches they began to attack the fraternities and sororities on the UNM campus. Amoung other things said there are a multitude of comments which were extremely offensive and hateful towards the organizations. The following is a list of a few of the things said by these individuals: all females in a sorority are whores and therefore it is called a "sorwhority", fraternity men only join fraternities for two reasons: to have sex, and to get drunk, fraternity men only think about their penises. Furthermore, these individuals also commented several times on having sex before marriage saying that if you did this you were a whore and will go to hell. They also attacked the members of the LGBTQ community explaining how they too will end up in hell for not being in relationships with members of the same sex. They also attacked members of other ethnicities. One in particular was a young Navajo women who attempted to speak on behalf of her people. The gentlemen known as Jexplained how the Navajo people as well as the members of the other Native American groups were "animals". Religious aspects only extend to a certain point, and these individuals over stepped there rights when they personally attacked the members of the Greek community, those of the LGBTQ community and those individuals who are Native American.
