CHARLOTTE CITY COUNCIL WHEREAS, on February 22, 2016, the Charlotte City Council adopted an ordinance amending its existing non-discrimination ordinances by adding marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to the list of characteristics that the City of Charlotte deems appropriate for protection against discrimination; and WHEREAS, on March 23, 2016, the North Carolina General Assembly enacted, and the Governor signed into law, North Carolina House Bill 2, a law that, among other ?lings, preempted the City?s authority to enact ordinances the prohibit discrimination and invalidated the City?s non?discrimination ordinances; and WHEREAS, this Council desires to help preserve and protect the economic wellbeing and the reputation of the State of North Carolina as a welcoming and inclusive State that values all of its people and visitors. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Charlotte City Council reaf?nns its opposition to discrimination based upon race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression; and This the 19th day of December, 2016. December 19, 2016 Ordinance Book 60, Page 467 ORDINANCE NUMBER: 8194 AN ORDINANCE REMOVING FROM THE CITY CODE CERTAIN PROVISIONS THAT HAVE BEEN PREEMPTED AND INVALIDATED BY STATE LAW WHEREAS, several ordinances that have been preempted and invalidated by various State laws over the past ten years remain published in the Charlotte City Code; and WHEREAS, the continued publication of preempted and invalidated ordinances can, at a minimum, cause confusion and misunderstanding; and WHEREAS the City Council has determined that the City Code should accurately re?ect ordinances that remain valid and 1n effect; and WHEREAS, in the event that the North Carolina General Assembly grants or?restores the authority of the City to enact ordinances on the matters that were the subject of the preempted and invalidated ordinances, the City Council could enact new ordinances.
