TACKLING THE HOUSING CRISIS Britain’s 9m in the private rented sector are being let down by the Conservative Government: l Rents have risen way above inflation so that people cannot save to buy a house. Tenants on low incomes need housing benefit to survive. l Tenants are on short-term contracts and can be evicted with two months’ notice and without the landlord giving a reason, even if they have paid the rent and looked after the property. For the 2m children living in private rented sector property, the disruption of moving may mean that they are forced to change school. l A third of private rented properties do not meet the national Decent Homes Standard. l We are pleased that the Government has adopted Labour’s policy of banning estate agent fees but will watch carefully to make sure that it gets implemented and with no loopholes Labour says that this cannot continue and supports: l The right of tenants to ask for a 5 year tenancy with a limit on rent increases with security as long as they pay the rent and look after the property. l A compulsory register of landlords so that rogue landlords can be identified by the Council. Landlords should provide evidence that their properties are of a decent standard. l A major programme of housebuilding by local councils as essential to tackle the housing crisis on the Island. The action group Generation Rent www.generationrent.org provides information on the private rented sector and how it can be changed and can give advice on setting up a Tenants’ Group. Do contact the local Labour Party if you think we can help. With hundreds of new members joining over the last year, the Isle of Wight Labour party has set up a Ryde branch which meets regularly in the town centre.
