San Diego Police Department 2016 Annual Review City Council February 14, 2017 Item 331 The City of SAN DIEGO) Police Department Overall Crime in 2016  A new definition of rape was implemented beginning in 2015, in compliance with UCR reporting requirements.  This report focuses on crime in 2015 and 2016, which are comparable; crime in previous years are not comparable.  With the exception of rape, the number of crimes in each of the categories in 2016 continues to be similar to the number of reported crimes from decades ago.  Overall crime in 2016 decreased compared to 2015, by 2.3%.  Overall crime in 2016 was the lowest in the past 47 years, except for 2014.  Compared to 2015, both violent and property crimes were lower in 2016, a decrease of 4.5% and 1.8% respectively.
