First Street San Jose, CA 95131 Dear Ms. Wagner: Last September West Sonoma County Union High School District reached a voluntary, full resolution of a discrimination complaint that had been filed earlier in the year with the US Department of Education?s Office for Civil Rights The agreement provides for education and training for students and staff which will help promote a learning environment that is free of unlawful discrimination and support our goal of enabling all students to reach their full potential. In furtherance of that goal and in accordance with the resolution agreement, the following is sample of some of the things the District has completed to date: 1. 8. Prepared, posted and disseminated a statement setting forth the District?s policy prohibiting unlawful discrimination and explaining where to go for assistance with discrimination concerns; Prepared a staff guidance memorandum which reviews discrimination complaint reporting procedures, mediation as a resolution option, investigation of complaints, and corrective actions; Planned staff training on the District's complaint policies and procedures, complaint reporting duties, Title VI and Participated in training on responding to discrimination complaints; Prepared orientation materials to inform students of the District?s policy prohibiting unlawful discrimination and how to seek assistance; Developed instructional materials on race, race-based discrimination and prohibited conduct to be implemented in classes at each grade level; Prepared a survey designed to give students and parents an opportunity to express their personal experiences and observations with regard to discrimination in the school environment; and Committed to maintaining a record of any race discrimination complaints. Our teachers, who have worked very hard to develop the instructional materials referenced in paragraph 5, above, look fonrvard to presenting the lessons and encouraging thoughtful discussions in our classrooms. The District will be analyzing the results of the survey and any complaint records to guide its ongoing efforts to promote and maintain a supportive learning environment of all.
