Friends, Thank you for participation and leadership during this year’s Family First week, and for your engagement with the diverse leaders of our community that came together to discuss how we make better investments in children and families.  It meant a great deal to have each of you as part of our programming this year, as well as involved in the meaningful conversations that took place. Moving forward, the work of the Family First Initiative will be advanced through our Family First Task Force committees. These citizen driven groups will be brought together in the coming months to continue our work to make Tallahassee a more vibrant place for children to grow strong, through quality early childhood education; family friendly workplaces; and an increase in parent engagement and empowerment. If you would like to learn more information about how you can serve on one of these Task Force committees, please let us know. As a recap of this year’s Family First week, our team has helped put together a video that offers some reflections of each of the events this year. Dear Friends, Being the wife of an elected official isn’t always easy. The late nights and early mornings, and the hustle and bustle of weekend events can become exhausting; especially with abundantly energetic twin two-year olds at home. But every once in a while, Andrew and I get a chance to stop and reflect on what so many of these challenges and opportunities are helping to do for the community we love. When I think of all of the work that has been done, and all of the positive impacts he has had a hand in creating; it makes it all worth it. I wanted to share with you a story that I think captures my husband, our family, and the work that we have committed ourselves to in this community. I am proud of the role he has played and continues to play in making our City a better place, and I remain ever hopeful for what is to come. http://capitaloutlook.com/site/gillum-got-an-early-start-on-carving-path-to-success/ With love, R. Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}}, I hope this message finds you well! I am reaching out after a very busy week for the Gillum Family. While the nation was focused on the spotlight of the Presidential Campaign from Joe Biden, Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton – we had our very own spotlight here in Tallahassee focused on Andrew Gillum. As you may know, Andrew was invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention and was the only Floridian to get a speaking role this year. In his speech, he spoke about the need for unity in our country and the common values, aspirations, and fears that we all hold for the welfare of our loved ones. He also talked about our twins – Jackson and Caroline – whose future is front and center in our minds as we continue to work toward a better community and nation. We couldn’t be more proud of our Mayor, and the sincere way he represented our community. In case you missed the coverage – You can watch the speech here.    Thank you so much for your support and love. It means a great deal to Andrew and our family. Sincerely, R. Jai     ==================================================  Gillum to speak at Democratic National Convention  Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum will have a coveted speaker slot next week at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. “I’m blown away,” Gillum said in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat. “I’m honored to have been asked to bring remarks on behalf of my home state. And I love that I get to represent the capital city of the third largest state in the country and one of the most politically significant states to decide the presidency.” Gillum is among more than 60 elected officials the Hillary Clinton campaign announced will be speaking at the convention. He was the only Floridian on the list released Thursday.   Gillum Graduates To The National Stage  “A lot of eyes are on Mayor Gillum, not just because he’s a rising political star but because of the accomplishments he’s had ever since coming out of college and being a true public servant.” Gillum became the youngest Tallahassee Commissioner in 2003 when he was elected at the age of 23. He served as Florida A&M University student body president and was the first student appointed to the school’s board of trustees. His appearance at the convention drew the inevitable comparison to President Barack Obama. Obama was running for the U.S. Senate in Illinois when he delivered the keynote address in 2004. Obama stressed his improbable rise. University of South Florida political scientist Susan MacManus watched from the hall in Philadelphia. She called it warm, inviting, and on point. “It was a message that resonated well, and I think it was a good first step onto the national stage.”    Mayor Gillum: Trust Can Be Restored Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum used his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday to call for national unity and pledge that with the right leadership, Americans’ trust in each other can be restored. “I believe with every fiber of my being that Hillary Clinton is the leader we need,” Gillum said to loud applause during a national televised address to delegates fathered in the Wells Fargo Center.          {{OrganizationAddress}} If you believe you received this message in error or wish to no longer receive email from us, please {{UnsubscribeLink}}. Leading up to such an important and historic election in our country, I promise to do my best to represent our City and State well.  I feel strongly that this is the most consequential election we have seen in our nation, in a generation. I promise to bring the best ideas, values, and thinking that our community has to offer to these important conversations on where our country is heading.  I remain eternally grateful for your continued guidance and support. While I am immensely proud of the leadership that the City has shown in this area, there is still much that needs to be done. Florida is ‘ground zero’ for climate change in North America, and it is a very real and serious threat to our state. This has compelled me to join with Mayors from across Florida to urge our state leaders to move us to a clean energy economy, where a minimum of 50% of our energy comes from clean energy sources, by 2030. This effort is imperative to the future prosperity of our state, and it is truly time for each of us to get engaged. I strongly believe that “we do not inherit the world from our ancestors, but borrow it from our children.”  I hope that this Earth Day, all of us can consider how to work together to leave a better world for our next generation.   Sincerely, Andrew Mayor, City of Tallahassee     REDUCINGGREEN HUUSEGASSES I City Utiities has reduced its carbon intensity by rougth 43% over the last two decades From 2033 to 2313 residential customers savv a 11% decrease in ?Gitv has recenllv announced the construction of a 33 mega-welt solar farm at the Tallahassee lntemationat Airport 'Gitv has implemented protected bike lanes and hike hoses to create a sale hiking corridor behlreen the Universities and Downtown: and is entering into a partnership to bring a hike-share program to Tallahassee SUSTAINABILITY . 9 Since 3313 Neighborhood Reach Frugrarn has issued over 3,333 grants for residents and helped create over $343,333 in utility savings at has issued rnilions of are in loans and rebates to help residents purchase energy ef?cient appliances to reduce ??ieir utility hill It trashy ascended available community green space Helped launch a Farmer's Market in Historic Frenchtovrn: and expanded Comma Garden efforts 100% at all trio-solids produced at Advanced Waste-scam Treatment Plant acorrvertsd to I Iertilizer {2,300 tons in Emit} ?1 Wel over 2,030 trees planted sites 2312 Received Tree Sitv designation tor at veers in a rovr . As mayor, the Key to the City is the highest honor that I can give.    As you know, last year's honor was bestowed to the first responders of the 2014 shooting incidents at Caracas Court and Stozier Library, and this year I am tapping our community to identify other outstanding citizens. We are looking for nominations of deserving individuals, organizations, businesses or collaboratives that have had a tremendous individual or collective impact on Tallahassee.   As a member and supporter of this community, I am asking for your help. Below, I have included a direct link to our nomination form. Please share this news widely, and submit your nominations for the 2016 Key to the City. For more information, feel free to visit the mayor's page at  www.talgov.com/Mayor.     Onward and Upward, Andrew   Mayor {{Disclaimer}} {{OrganizationAddress}} If you believe you received this message in error or wish to no longer receive email from us, please {UnsubscribeLink} Friends, I am sure that you would agree that in light of the recent tragedy in Orlando, the importance of connecting as a community is greater today than ever. It’s time to talk, so let’s bring community conversation to the forefront.   We are under two weeks away from The Longest Table, and we believe it essential that we have as many members of our great City and the Capital Region come together as possible.  On June 26th at 5:30 P.M., we are breaking conversations into smaller dinners of 6-8 citizens in over 100 homes and public spaces around our community.  The conversations that will be had at these dinners are more vital now than ever before.  We cannot be a community where ignorance of one another leads to hate-filled tragedies. I hope you will take us up on this invitation to break bread with your fellow citizens of Tallahassee so that we may learn a bit more about one another.  It is my earnest belief that if we come together and meet members of our community that we may not normally have the chance to interact with, we will grow stronger, we will grow closer, and we will grow more resolved to deter and avoid a horrible incident like the one we saw unfold over the weekend.  We ask that you please Sign up to HOST a Longest Table dinner or ATTEND a dinner at one of the homes or public spaces around the City. Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}}, Last October, we hosted the first Longest Table dinner in the middle of Park Avenue in Downtown Tallahassee. That evening, over 400 citizens came out, shared a meal with people they did not know, and shared conversations about the things that were most important to them at one continuous table. With this incredible level of engagement, we were able to continue this tradition in June, only we broke the conversations into smaller dinners of 6-8 citizens in over 100 homes and public spaces around our community. These collective dinner tables gathered 850 citizens together in intimate settings and brought our conversations to a more human level – giving us the opportunity to truly see one another. As the summer comes to a close, I am proud that our community will once again bring The Longest Table back together, this time on October 9th along FAMU Way. Our goal is to continue to bring our City closer together , one conversation at a time. If you are interested in attending, please sign up at www.longesttable.com and spread the word! All are invited to #JoinTheConversation! Additionally, if you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Katharine Smith at 850-8918728 or Katharine.Smith@talgov.com. That evening, over 400 citizens came out, shared a meal with people they did not know, and shared conversation around things that were important to them in our community. We competed for a grant from the Knight Foundation to support the Longest Table initiative. I am proud to share that out of over 4,500 applicants and 155 finalists, The Longest Table was selected as one of the 37 most innovative and effective ideas nationwide, earning us a grant of $57,250 to help us expand this awesome initiative. This June, we are breaking this event into homes and public spaces throughout Tallahassee. The goal is to recruit over 100 hosts to open their homes to 6-8 community members to continue the conversations we started last year. The grant funding will ensure that no one is excluded from participating by helping us provide scholarships to host households to keep the focus on the conversations and not on financial stresses. Now that we have announced the next phase of The Longest Table Initiative, it’s time to get our community involved. Dear Faith Leaders, This message is to inform you of our 2016 Operation Safe Neighborhoods Program, and request your assistance in recruiting participants for this summer’s events. Last summer, we had over 300 participants join in OSN as we passed out 4,000 informational flyers in 10 different neighborhoods, and informed residents of how they could lend assistance in fighting back against violent crime. This summer, TPD is hosting a number of neighborhood forums, with the first one being held June 9th, from 6 – 8 PM at the Piney Z Clubhouse, located at 950 Piney Z Plantation Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32311.  The first hour of these forums will be dedicated to TPD introducing their Community Policing Strategies, introducing officers that will be working in the neighborhood, and providing an opportunity for residents to ask questions.  This will take about an hour; and the second hour will be spent walking the neighborhood to pass out information on how residents can help police deter crime in their community.   We would greatly appreciate your assistance in recruiting members of your organization to come and be a part of this year’s OSN.  Please take a look at the below dates and locations, and e-mail Mike Alfano in our Office with the date(s) of the event you will commit to attending, and how many individuals you will be bringing with you Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Good afternoon, On Tuesday evening, members from all walks of our community gathered together in unity and reflection around the tragic events that occurred in Baton Rouge, St. Paul, and Dallas. It was a solemn occasion that sought to begin the difficult work of rebuilding trust and moving forward as one community.  As Mayor, I promise that I will continue to work each and every day to put policies and practices in place to keep each of us safe; to help ensure that our community remains united; and to work to make Tallahassee a place where we truly see each other and show one another love, understanding, and respect - no matter the color of our skin or the side of town we live. I want to sincerely thank those of you who were able to join us; and also want to provide a glimpse of the powerful messages our faith leaders delivered Tuesday night. Remembrance – Offered by Rabbi Stanley Garfein Now is a time of remembrance, when we mourn and remember the lives of those that were lost. Healing – Offered by Imam Amro Abass Now is a time of healing, when we as a community help each other cope with tragedy, and cope with feelings of anger, loss, and helplessness. Community – Offered by Pastor Kandace Brooks Now is a time to come together, to reflect that while we as individuals are unique and diverse, we are one community; one Tallahassee. Law Enforcement – Offered by Pastor Dean Inserra Now is a time to support our Law Enforcement, to acknowledge that these men and women work to keep us and our families safe; we must all ensure that we do everything we can to aid their efforts. Unity – Offered by Pastor Judy Mandrell Now is a time to be united, to stand together and know that we all want the same things for our loved ones and our families.  We must not let the events of the past week divide us, but rather focus on creating a more just society for all.  We are inextricably linked as one human family, sharing common hopes and fears. I hope that you’ll join me in the difficult work ahead to move our community forward together. Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}},   As we welcome another holiday season here in the Capital City, now is the time that we hold close to our loved ones and embrace the season of giving and thanks. This week, we give thanks for those that love us unconditionally, and we reflect on all that has made this year so special. I remain very thankful for the opportunity to serve our great city, and for all of the great friends and neighbors that have joined our work to make Tallahassee a dynamic and welcoming place for all to live, work, and play.     From my family to yours, and on behalf of everyone here at the City, I would like to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}}, I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the final days of this beautiful Tallahassee summer. As you remember, last October we hosted our inaugural Longest Table event where over 400 community members participated in a transformational dining and dialogue experience. This past June, we had over 850 people participate at more than 110 homes and public spaces as we expanded the Longest Table concept into smaller conversations. Given the difficult environment that many communities are navigating, I could not be prouder of how Tallahassee residents are choosing to lean into these challenges. To showcase our community’s effort, we have compiled both Longest Table events into a short highlight video that can be viewed here. With the continued support of our community partners, we are planning our next Longest Table event for October 9th – with the table to be set along the beautiful FAMU Way. If you would like to participate, please visit longesttable.com to register or call 850-891-8728! Thank you for your continued support of The Longest Table initiative. Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}}, Last week alongside public and nonprofit leaders from around our community, we kicked off the Tallahassee Innovation Partnership. The initiative strengthens community innovation by connecting local startup companies with large institutions - like local and state government, hospitals, and  universities – who have the ability to take advantage of their goods and services on a scale that will help those entrepreneurs take off. If you weren't able to attend our launch event, check out our recap video below! Partners including Domi Station, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, the State of Florida, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, and the City of Tallahassee, gathered to listen to several pitches from entrepreneurs around our community. We’re excited to carry the momentum of this successful event forward through other TIP initiatives, and hope you will be able to help support and grow the Tallahassee Innovation Partnership along the way.  Stay tuned for communication and updates from TIP, and please share the video with your networks! Join me in helping make Tallahassee the Capital of Innovation.  Best, Andrew {{Disclaimer}} {{OrganizationAddress}} If you believe you received this message in error or wish to no longer receive email from us, please {{UnsubscribeLink}}. Dear {{FirstName,DefaultTo=Friend}},  For the first time in over 10 years, an Amtrak Passenger Train will be stopping through Tallahassee this Friday at 2:37pm. This train will be carrying elected officials, business leaders, and advocates alike, who are all seeking to restore rail service back to the Capital City. To mark the occasion, City leadership alongside several community partners, will be hosting a celebration event at 918 Railroad Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32310 from 2pm to 3pm. As Tallahassee grows and develops into a world class city, so too must our transportation options be expanded and refined. I am very excited for the potential of rail transportation options for the people of this community, and I hope to see you this Friday as we continue to work on this exciting opportunity. Greetings, On February 22nd, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum will receive the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Partner America 2017 “Small Business Advocate Award” for his efforts and support of small business in the city. The award is given by Partner America, a public-private partnership that was created by The US Conference of Mayors to assist mayors in providing the resources and information small businesses need to thrive within their local communities and the global economy. The keynote speaker, Curtis Cello, will be delivering his perspective on "Growth in a New Business Climate". Curtis is the Director of Field Service for American Management Services, Inc.  Few people have made as many face to face contacts with business owners across the nation as he has over the last decade. Through this experience, Curtis has gained a unique understanding of the challenges facing owners in today’s business climate. Dear YEO Members, I am writing you to share an op-ed that I published today in Medium, which outlines a fight I am involved in against members of the gun lobby.  Several members of the Tallahassee City Commission and I are being sued for refusing to remove ordinances that banned shooting guns in our public parks. I hope that you will consider joining an initiative I am launching, the Campaign to Defend Local Solutions (CDLS) outlined in the op-ed.  We are aiming to push back against the looming threat to elected officials to pass local solutions to their local problems. I hope that you will share this post with your constituents, and invite them to stay informed of our efforts at defendlocal.com Next week, we’ll be officially launching our the CDLS website and Campaign. Through this effort we’ll be hosting events, film screenings, and press events in Florida and around the country.  By amplifying the voices of those elected officials across the country fighting to defend local solutions, we hope to bring this fight to the National level.  If you are willing to stand with me to #DefendLocal please fill out this short form or email the Campaign Manager, Mike Alfano, at defendlocal@gmail.com.
