INSTITUTE FOR LEGISLATIVE ACTION 11250 Mm. ROAD 12030 laOf?ce ofthe Executzve Director r. CHRIS W. Cox AMEN March 17, 2017 The Honorable Mitch McConnell The Honorable Charles E. Schumer Senate Majority Leader Senate Minority Leader 317 Russell Senate Of?ce Building 322 Hart Senate Of?ce Building Washington, DC. 20510 Washington, DC. 20510 Dear Majority Leader McConnell and Minority Leader Schumer: I am writing on behalf of the National Ri?e Association to urge a ?yes? vote on the con?rmation of Judge Neil M. Gorsuch as Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch is, by all accounts, a jurist in the mold of the late Antonin Scalia and a worthy and appropriate successor for his seat on the Court. He is a constitutional originalist in the true sense of the word, focusing on the intent of the framers of our Constitution in approaching cases that come before him. Judge Gorsuch has made clear his understanding of the importance of the Second Amendment?s guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense in past opinions. Concurring in the case of United States. v. Games-Perez, for example, he noted that ?[T]he Second Amendment protects an individual?s right to own ?rearms and may not be infringed At a later stage in that case, he wrote an opinion dissenting from the maj ority?s misapplication of a federal gun control law, stating that ?rearm possession is not only typically lawful, but also . . protected as a matter of constitutional right.? The NRA has every con?dence that Judge Gorsuch will protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners and will faithfully apply the Constitution in the cases that come before him. He has our strongest support for con?rmation. Because of the importance of this issue to NRA members and gun owners throughout the country, votes on his con?rmation will be considered in future candidate evaluations and we will notify our members accordingly.
