SUMMARY 1.1 Program Overview The city of New Orleans’ Road Safety Camera Program is designed to enhance public safety by reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes caused by red-light running and speeding. RED-LIGHT RUNNING CITATIONS OVERVIEW 2.1 Total Red-light Running Citations New Orleans began its Red-Light Safety Camera Program in April 2008. Currently, 19 red-light safety cameras are in use, deterring dangerous driving behavior. The community’s recidivism rate is 16 percent, which means 84 percent of all violators who receive a ticket and pay it do not get another such violation. The community’s recidivism rate is 21 percent, which means 79 percent of all violators who receive a ticket and pay it do not get another such violation. This low rate of repeat behavior, examined over the past four years, indicates a change in driver behavior for the better. The video from red-light safety cameras can be used to alert motorists in New Orleans and across the nation about the need for continued intersection safety enforcement and increased driver attention. Red-light safety camera video footage is available to police investigators to help them with accident scene reconstruction or to assist in an ongoing criminal investigation, and other police matters. Using video in this way can help reduce police operating costs, and provide a costsavings benefit to taxpayers.
