VERY School District Community. March 21, 2017 Dr. Ann Ford Dr. Doris Hicks Joseph A. Craig Charter School 1423 St. Phillip Street New Orleans, Louisiana 70116 Dear Dr. Hicks and Dr. Ford: On Saturday, March 18"1 the Recovery School District (RSD) was made aware of an incident involving the of a grade student. The RSD was contacted by the parent who was upset about the degree of force used by a security officer on her 9-year old child. RSD staff spoke with both the parent and school staff who con?rmed the details of the incident. According to school staff, the child was handcuffed as a means of restraining him while he behaved in a manner that staff thought was a danger to himself or others. However, I am very concerned about the use of handcuffs as a restraint mechanism for young students in crisis. I would like to schedule time to for you to meet with members of my staff next week. Prior to that meeting, I ask that you provide me with the following information. Friends of King?s policies related to seclusion and restraint, PBS, and corporal punishment Any training provided to staff regarding seclusion and restraint, PBS, and corporal punishment A list of staff members at Craig who hold the appropriate seclusion and restraint certi?cations Information about the company that employs the security guard involved in the incident in question and the training they provide on the use of restraint to their employees My assistant, Natalie Gautier, will be in touch soon to schedule a meeting. Should you have any questions in the meantime, please call me at 504-373+6200. Sincerely, Kunjan Narechania Superintendent 1615 Poydras Street.Suite 400. New Orleans. LA 504.373.6200
