In the organizational structure of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the Upward Bound Project is part of TRIO College Access Services, which includes two Upward Bound projects and an Educational Talent Search project. These TRIO services are under the umbrella of the Student Affairs Division. The Director reports to the Dean of Students and attends monthly directors' meetings convened by the Dean. Composition will develop students’ abilities to write for communication & reflection, with individual voice, clear exposition, style choices, and grammar. Literature & Composition II Increases critical thinking and study skills through reading, speaking, & research. Skills covered include research, academic writing, editing and revising until achieving a polished essay. . Latin Designed to introduce students to the Latin language and culture while developing their functional grasp of sophisticated English vocabulary derived from Latin. Mathematics: Pre-Algebra thru Calculus Focus on developing individual skills. Classes cover topics all students need to prepare for the next level math and to develop stronger oral, written and problem-solving skills. Chemistry Hands-on use of measuring devices to gather and analyze data. Notes, lab reports & homework develop math, writing and problem-solving skills to excel in college preparatory courses. Environmental Science Explore concrete examples and problems in the lab and the field, students develop greater understanding and skill using scientific method. Integrated Biology/Math-Geom./ELA Unit Use scientific methods, mathematical concepts & technology to analyze, compile and report findings around water quality and invasive species with the living laboratories of a bog, streams, and lakes. Asking scientific questions, students plan and carry out investigation, collect samples, analyze data, and conclude with a presentation. 29
