TO: SANFORD REALTY MANAGEMENT, LLC FROM: JOANN GRAVES 3322 Wheeler Road, SE #201 DATE: APRIL 24, 2017 RE: ESCAPING GAS IN BUILDING An incident of escaping. gas in the building happened today, well really yesterday but being that I was off work sick, and the smell had permeated into my apartment lead to my taking the appropriate action that probably saved not only the lives of the tenants but the building itself. The smell was worse out in the hallways and with almost 2 days having gone by before this was addressed again says how sorry Sanford Management is and truly fit the name of being called the ?Slum Lords of the District.? What really pisses me off is that upon noticing the smell was getting stronger up on the floor I reside on, I went around to the Rental Office (which is located in the same building) and reported it to the young lady sitting at the front desk. I felt she was nice in her greeting to me, but very non-chalet about what I told her, which was that gas was escaping from somewhere in the building and she needed to step out in the hallway and she?d smell it. Her reply was okay thank you. And I bet a dime to a dollar she didn?t do jack. When I left I already knew nothing was going to be done so upon arriving back in my unit I called Washington Gas myself and reported it. I?d started getting a headache, the smell was only getting worse and it needed to be addressed. This was an emergency. We do remember what recently happened in Silver Spring when that apartment building blew up and lives were lost, and injuries sustained. I just didn?t want that to happen to myself, nor the tenants, including the sorry ass people in the Rental Office. The Washington Gas receptionist explained what I needed to do as far as not smoking, using any appliances, and a few other precautions, besides instructing me to let her hang up the phone on her end before I did. She stated that the least little spark could start a fire if the smell was as strong as I?d stated. I followed her instructions to the letter and in less than 10 to 15 minutes the Gas man was knocking on my door. I was quite impressed with how fast Washington Gas was able to get a technician over here. He said he was already in the area so that was. a plus I felt. His name was? and upon doing a walk through in my unit he (I followed him around) went to every door in this building including the Rental Office with a machine similar to a Geiger counter with a long attachment to it which made a sound to alert where the possible gas leak might be coming from. At some doors the machine went ballistic and he did this twice to each door. I then informed him (as tailed along with him) that the gas meters were down in the laundry room and he might want to check there. He made the comment that there were some guys standing around in there and once we got down there, one of the tenants was in there cutting hair. Can you fathom that, he was using the electricity in the laundry room and cutting someone?s hair. Anyway, the_ entered and went back to survey the meters which by then the hair cutter and friends were packing things up and two of them also mentioned how as soon as you came into the building you could smell the gas. They left and I returned to my unit, only shortly to have?, the gas technician ask that I come down to the laundry room'as he?d found where the gas was leaking from. I went and he sprayed some type of chemical on the wires connected to the dryers in the laundry room and you could see a bunch of bubbles foaming. Upon witnessing this I asked if I could get someone from the rental office to come and witness this as well. i was though truly elated that he?d found the problem and himself said how ?he always felt good when he was able to find and resolve the gas issues on any jobs he responds to.? Anyway, I knocked and knocked on the rental door and could hear that people were in the office and not a single person responded. I was like ?what the fuck? and knocked a little harder still no re5ponse so I told_ was going to go and walk around to the office he said ?you don?t have to do that? and proceeded to bang on the door as if the police or the fire department was there. The door was answered then and I could see the same girl I?d originally spoke to about this issue andwsitting at her office desk, but I guess he was a maintenance guy who came out looking us up and down but went into the laundry room explained what was going on and that he was turning the gas off to the dryers and placing a ?danger? tag on the pipes or plugs. The maintenance guy (nonchalantly) said okay. ?went on to say that he was going to need a signature from someone in the office which the same guy said he could come around to the office when he was done and someone would sign. I thanked uprofusely, for all that he did and he?d propped the front entrance door open with a big rock once he discovered the windows on the top floor didn?t open. He said the building needed the ventilation to get the gas smell out since there were no windows that could be opened. I was in total agreement with that since the door doesn?t lock anyway. We shook hands and I plan to contact Washington Gas to commend him on the great job he did in getting what I term to be a serious issue taken care of. Too bad the Rental Office didn?t show the same concern. i guess when there?s no money involved for them, they just don?t give a damn
