Riveroll Director's Report Presented to the GPA Board of Directors September 2016 Commitment Day On Friday, August 26, 2016 the Office of Student Affairs invited our new cohort of 220 6th grade students to Commitment Day; our annual New Student orientation. Parents and students received a formal introduction to the GPA family and together we celebrated the beginning of the new school year. Students spent time in their period classroom getting to know their teacher and other eagles that would join them on their first day. They also received a free GPA uniform tie after pledging together with their fellow eagles to work together for success and listening to the GPA messages about gratitude and eagle pride. All families and students were given a tour of our campus, explaining all important areas and details. This was followed by a short Middle School Cheer performance to demonstrate middle school's strong sense of school pride and a 7th grade Fashion Show exhibiting the GPA uniform. Convocation On Thursday, August 25, 2016 Gompers Preparatory Academy hosted our annual Senior Convocation ceremony honoring the Class of 2017. Our 114 members of the Senior Class and their families gathered together to welcome the start of their last year in high school before going off to college. They received their striped senior tie and teachers honored each student by putting on their senior blazer. Vision 2020 During the ?rst week of school the freshman class created their personal vision for their future. On Friday, September 2, 2016, 137 freshmen welcomed their families to Freshman Orientation, and showcased their commitment to success with their own vision board presented on a Chromebook. The students solidified their commitment with a class pledge that culminated with the parents pinning their child with a class of 2020 pin. Parents received a clear idea of what to expect from the GPA high school experience and, in hand, received information about A-G Requirements, 3 four~year course planner provided by UCSD, and a current copy of the Freshman Calendar of Events. New Departments at GPA Of?ce Of School Safety (088) Formed as an offshoot of the former Office of the Dean, the Of?ce of School Safety was created enable a team of staff members to focus solely on issues of student and staff safety, from classroom safety to campus supervision and disaster preparedness. Of?ce of Student Conduct (OSC) - Formerly known as the Of?ce of the Dean, this department is now focused solely on matters of student discipline. The Of?ce of Student Conduct handles all things related to the Code of Conduct, plus related parent communications. Visual and Performing Arts Program (VAPA) - In response to increased number of high school students enrolled at an additional A-G Visual and Performing Arts class was needed. After receiving generous donations from donors and foundations in the San Diego community a new Performing Arts Program is being launched this year. For 2016-2017, the course ?Musical Production? was added to the master schedule, and three staff positions were created to launch the new program. One-to-One Technology Program Launch - High School- Students in grades 10-12 are provided with a personal Chromebook and case to check out for one full semester. Students must have access to technology beyond the school day in order to be competitive on their college bound path. CELDT The 2016 administration of the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) is underway to GPA. This state assessment looks at our English Learner?s acquisition of the English language and assesses their progress annually. Students are assessed in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking in English. Students who score at the Advanced or Early Advanced levels will be eligible for reclassi?cation to Fluent English Pro?cient in the spring. We currently have 293 students in the process of being assessed and will complete the CELDT administration on October 18, 2016. WASC In August of 2014, GPA received a 6-year accreditation our institution through 2020. Our 6-year accreditation requires a mid?cycle visit, which will take place this year. GPA is deep in preparation of our Mid?Cycle visit that will take place October and November lst. At that time, a portion of our previous visiting committee will return to GPA to meet with our board of directors, school leadership and other groups responsible for the monitoring and implementation of the schoolwide action plan. The visiting committee will focus on the progress made on the critical areas for follow-up made by the previous WASC visiting committee and review our schoolwvide action plan. in preparation for our visit, GPA prepared a Progress Report, which compiles of the progress made since the previous visit. SBAC Data This summer GPA received our preliminary SBAC assessment data for the Spring 2016 administration. Students in grades 6th - 8th and 11th were assessed in ELA and mathematics according to the Common Core State Standards. We are proud of our students? achievement on this rigorous assessment. Culture Camp This summer, there were two session of a rigorous two weeks Culture Camp for our new GPA employees. During this time, new staff members were taught the History of GPA including a community walk to support in their transition to serve Gompers Preparatory Academy and our community. In addition to learning the history, our new employees learned the basics of GPA, focused on school culture, clear expectations around professionalism, how to ?Teach Like a Pirate? and what supports are available to them. GPA is excited about our new hires and is looking forward to great year. Parent Preparatory Academy This year we are adding a new, more comprehensive parent education program Parent Preparatory Academy that will replace Coffee with the Director. This in depth collaboration with parents will focus on the parent component of preparing students for college. Classes throughout the year will take place in both mornings and evenings to accommodate parent/family schedules and walk through what parents need to know to accelerate academic achievement and prepare students for success in higher education. Architects have ?nalized preliminary designs and now those designs and are being re?ned and expanded to develop the construction documents that will be submitted to the Department of the State Architect in a few months. Groundbreaking is currently slated for Fall 201 7. Campus Visitors Mario Koran from the Voice of San Diego has visited several times, including our First Day of School and a Fantastic Friday. He is currently working on a few stories that touch on charter schools, speci?cally schools in Southeastern San Diego.
