Memorandum May 15, 201? Governor Jay lnslee, State of Washington Lennard Gar?eld, MDHAI Kimberly Rorschach, mm The Cascadia Center of Discoyery Institute requests that the State of Washington negotiate with Hitachi-Eosen, the owner of Bertha to acquire parts ofthe deep be re tunneling machine for permanent display in Seattle. It striI-zes us that MDHAI and the Ciutdc or Sculpture Park are two potential sites for display to the public. Bop [lioneganr CECJ of lyarsr has wo rI-zed diligently with the Port of Seattle and a host of stakeholders to acquire and store the head of Bertha and we wholeheartedly support his efforts. The Cascadia Center was an early adyocate for the deep pore tunneling technology as a way to best reconnect Seattle to the waterfront. We are pleased that after some early challengesr she has successfully accomplished her purpose. Bertha represents the finest in worldwide tunneling technology while re?ectiye of Washington state's pioneer spirit in constructing railroad tunnels through the Cascades and in downtown Seattler as well as tod ay's ongoing transit tunneling projects. We are proud that the state named her Bertha after Seattle's first female Mayor and pelieye citizens who may not I-znow Washington state history should be reminded of her accomplishments as well. The Ciutdc or Sculpture ParI-z represents the recon necticn of Seattle to the waterfront ?as do es the deep pore tunnel. And near the north pqrtalr displays the finest in examples of industry and history in our region. It would be a shame to see a remarkable piece of Seattle's history yanish completely from her - and our - legacy. Bruce Agnew Cascadia Center
