Metropolitan Council shared Metro Transit's post. Saturday, 27 May 2017 at 11:47am CDT ·  Please see the statements below from Chair Adam Duininck and Metro Transit Police Chief John Harrington. Statement from Metropolitan Council Chair Adam Duininck: I was shocked and dismayed to learn that the rider was in ICE custody and scheduled for deportation. Our understanding this past week was that the rider had been released from custody. Believing that the rider had been released and had a court date scheduled for late June related to three misdemeanor charges, it was my hope that the rider would be possibly placed in a diversion program or have charges dropped, which would not require a court date. We only learned of ICE's involvement Friday evening, when a Pioneer Press reporter called our communications office. To learn at this point that the information we had was not accurate is upsetting and frustrating. I will be looking into why the information we received was not accurate. At the time we were told the rider had been released from custody, he had actually been in ICE custody for nearly a week. The objective of our police force is to be a community partner, and to protect the safety and security of all members of our community. I believe we had an officer make a serious mistake. We take responsibility for that action. And we will be seeking the advice and counsel of community leaders to ensure we keep this from happening again in the future. Frankly, I and all our council members - expect more from our training and our department. It is troubling that something that started as a routine fare check resulted in a pending deportation. We remain committed to uncovering what went wrong and doing better in the future.
