22 A number of examples oi attempted and real attacks on Mr Berezovsky's own Ille' as well as that of his associates, were set out in Mr Marino's first witness statement For ease of reierence, have summarised these examples below, Mr Berezovsky has been under threat of assassination in Russia since the early 19905. in 1994' a remotercontrolled car bomb exploded in a nearby car when Mr Berezuvsky's car was pulling out at the Club' decapllatihg his driver and injuring Mr Berezovsky, in 1997 there was an FSB plot to assassinate him, which was subsequently revealed to Mr Berezovsky by Mr Litvinehko, The assassination threat was not limited to Russia in 2002, Mr Berezovsky received a warning < Nor have the previous assassination attempts been confined to Mr Eerezovsky. They have extended to a number or people who have previously been or assistance to him. Thus (and by way oi several non-exhaustive examples)' On 21 August 2002, Mr Golovyiov (a political associate oi Mr Berezovsky) was assassinated. (ii) An attempt was made to assassinate Mr Alexander Kostarev on 19 March 2002' Mr Kostarev had organised the snowmg or a documentary that was sponsored by Mr Berezovsky, and was also active in Liberal Russia On 17 April 2003' Sergei Yushenkov was assassinated just hours atter announcing tnat Liberal Russia would take part in the parliamentary elections lixed lor that December. The clear consensus among commentators was that this was a political killing. (iv) Vuri Shchekochikhin was another liberal member at the Dulna' and was also Deputy Editor at the opposition newspaper, Novaya Gazeta It was Mr Snoekoohlokhin who played the rnost influential role in the publication at the book 'Blowing Up Russia as a special issue or Novaya Gazeta on 27 August 2001, The book, authored by Mr Litvinenko and Yuri Felsnt'insky, documents acts at terror and contract killings organised by the FSB, as well as dealing in detail with the bombing of apartment buildings in Russia He died on 3 July 2003, apparently as the result oi a slow acting poison Finally and most notoriously, Mr Eerezovsky's good Mann and associate Mr Litvinenkoi who had himselt received political asylum in the UK. received a tatal dose oi polonium-ZtO in London in November 2005. Mt Eerezovsky informed Mr Marina (and tntorms me) that Mr Litvinenko inlorrned him (when he visited him after the poisoning at London's University College Hospital) that he had no doubt that the Russian authorities had commissioned his assassination and that Andrei Lugovoy. a former FSB agent, had administered the poison which he knew was killing him It is a matter of public record that the Russian authorities have steadtastly retused the British Government's requests tor the extradition or Mr Lugovoy. On 26 January 2007, it was reported' senior British government officials have [Old the Guardian that officials Moscow have already indicated (hell willingness to Strike a deal which would See the Suspect being handed over in return for Mr Esrszovksy's extradition" .17/297
