AUTOPSY: The autopsy is performed at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences by Forensic Pathology Fellow Danielle D.O., under the supervision of Assistant Medical Examiner Darshan R. Phatak, M.D., pursuant to Article 49.25, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, beginning at approximately 3:30 pm. on March 6, 2017. Photographs and radiographs are taken. EXTERNAL APPEARANCE: When first viewed, the remains are accompanied by torn black and red material. No other personal effects or jewelry are present. Eight paper bags which are labeled 7~0854? and accompany the decedent contain numerous bones which are described further below. An animal nest is also received with the body and discarded. INTERNAL EXAMINATION: No external features, viscera or bodily fluids remain. The skeletal remains are approximately 82 percent complete and consist of the following: (See REPORT OF ANTHROPOLOCICAL EXAMINATION). HEAD: A skull and mandible with predominantly natural teeth is devoid of any acute trauma. No calvarial fractures are present. The first two maxillary teeth are absent within the sockets, and there are four natural teeth with evidence of antemortem dental care to include white metal material in the lower teeth. No epidural, subdural, or subarachnoid hemorrhages or membranes are present. AXIAL SKELETON: The bilateral clavicles are absent. A portion of the sacrum is present with postmortem animal activity and no evidence of antemortem trauma. The lumbar vertebrae are absent. EXTREMITIES: The upper appendicular skeletal bones consisting of both humeri, radii, and ulnae are present. Four right carpals and all left carpals, 3 unsided metacarpals, Unknown 7?0854 proximal manual phalanges, 8 middle manual phalanges, and 10 distal manual phalanges are absent. The right patella is absent. The bilateral femurs have no evidence of antemortem trauma. The midshaft of the left femur has a remodeled hard fracture callus. The bilateral tibia and fibula are present. The distal ends of all bones have extensive postmortem animal activity. TOXICOLOGY: No specimens are available for submission or retention. HISTOLOGY: No specimens are available for submission or retention. The left metacarpal and a tooth are retained for identification attempts. PATHOLOGICAL l. Skeletonized remains (see REPORT OF ANTHROPOLIGCAL CONSULTATION and COMMENT): A. Adult female greater than 40 years 8. Remote left femoral mid?shaft fracture with callus and no evidence of acute antemortem trauma C. Extensive postmortem animal activity D. Remains recovered from between the walls of a house, per report ll. Unidentified at time of examination COMMENT: Given that no external features, soft tissues or bodily fluids are extant to definitively exclude a natural, traumatic, toxicological or other cause ofdeath, the cause and manner of death of this unknown adult female is best classified as UNDETERMINED. In addition, the source and circumstances towards death are unclear; these unidentified remains were recovered from between the walls of a house that was solely tenanted by a 61 year?old white woman who was reported missing in August of 201 and are therefore consistent with being her. However, we await positive identification confirmation. Should additional information become available, the case could then be reviewed. ?Caa:Numberi': I Exan?nen Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences :r?Settion: Pathology Form Title: Autopsy Diagram skeleton, from and back Rev; 5' .. Pinto, Forensic Anthropologist REPORT OF ANTHROPOLOGY CONSULTATION CASE NUMBER: NAME: Unknown PATHOLOGIST: Danielle DO and Darshan Phatak, MD DATE (completed): April 5, 2017 On March 6, 2017, Dr. Forensic Pathology Fellow under the supervision of Assistant Medical Examiner, Dr. Phatak, requested a biological profile of the skeletal remains from an unidentified decedent, 7?0854. The remains were retained post? autOpsy and transferred to the Anthropology Laboratory for chemical processing. The remains were examined grossly, diagrammed, photographed, and radiographed. Dental and osseous samples were retained for DNA analysis (See identification). The remains will be returned to Morgue staff. Inventory/Minimum Number of individuals: The remains associated with 7?0854 are consistent with the presence of a single individual based on the lack of repeated elements present. The recovered skeletal elements represent approximately 82% of the complete skeleton, an estimate derived using the Grisbaum and Ubelaker (200]) method. The missing elements are listed below. . Hyoid bone . Both clavicles . Right patella . 5 unsided and unseriated ribs . 8 unseriated vertebrae . Carpals: 4 right and all left . Metacarpals: 3 unsided . Manual phalanges: 5 proximal, 8 middle, and TO distal This inspection is accredited under the forensic unit?s i 7020 accreditation issued by Nationai Accreditation Board. Refer to certificate and scope of accreditation #4979. Unknown Report of Anthropology Consultation 7?0854 -2- - All tarsals . Metatarsals: 3 unsided . Pedal phalanges: 2 proximal, 8 middle, and i0 distal Summary of Biological Profile: The summary of the biological profile is as follows: 0 Sex: Female . Age: Adult, possibly over the age of 40 years . Ancestry: WhiteiEuropean . Stature: Postmortem damage of all lower limb bones precluded estimation of stature; however, the overall body size appears relatively small. Biological Profile: Sex The sex estimate of 7?0854 is female. This estimate is based on a combination of morphoscopic and morphometric traits from the cranial and postcranial skeleton. The morphoscopic traits of the cranium and mandible were scored using the Walker method, which provided a result of female with a probability of 0.63 when three traits are included. in addition, the right pubic bone displays a subpubic concavity and narrow ischiopubic ramus, two out of three Phenice traits observed in females. Measurements from the cranium also provide statistical support for the estimate of female (see Ancestry for details). Age 7e0854 is estimated to be an adult, possibly over the age of 40 years. Due to the extensive postmortem damage, none of the standard age indicators are present. The only ones available are the spheno?occipital and bony degenerative changes. The is fused, consistent with an individual over the age of i8 years. Osteophytic lipping is also observed on the vertebral bodies of the lower lumbar vertebrae, a finding typically associated with individuals over the age of 40 years. The overall bone appears thinned and reduced in quality as is seen in elderly individuals. The only bone with no postmortem damage was the right radius and no degenerative changes were observed on the articular surfaces. Due to the varied indicators, a specific This inspection is accredited under the forensic unit?s i7020 accreditation issued by Nationa/ Accreditation Board. Refer to certi?cate and scope of accreditation i 979. Unknown Report of Anthropology Consultation 7~0854 -3- age interval cannot be established; however, the morphology is consistent with an adult, possibly over the age of 40 years. Ancestry The ancestry of 7?0854 is estimated as White/European. This estimate is based on morphoscopic and morphometric traits of the cranium. The morphoscopic traits were examined using the Hefner method resulting in a summed score of 6, which predicts White ancestry. Using FORDISC 3.1, a multidiscriminant function analysis software, the cranial measurements from 7?0854 were compared to all males and females in the Forensic Databank. Using a stepwise elimination process to reduce the number of measurements and groups, 7-0854 was estimated as a White female with a Posterior Probability of 0.820, Typicality of 0.958, Typicality Chi of 0.957, and Typicality of 0.915. The morphoscopic and morphometric results provide strong support for the estimated ancestry of White/European. Stature The stature of 7-0854 could not be estimated due to the extensive postmortem damage present on the epiphyses of all the lower limb bones; however, the decedent does appear visually to be relatively small. Dentition: The dentition of 7?0854 is in moderate condition. Extensive attrition is present on the occlusal surfaces of all the teeth, including those with restorations. Teeth 1, 3, 16, 17, and 32 are absent antemortem. Amalgam restorations are present on teeth 2, 14, 15, 18, 19, 24, 25, 29, and 30. Dental crowns are present on 6, 13, and 30. Several teeth display caries and/or evidence of postmortem breakage. Trauma: Remote trauma is present on the left femurfrom A remodeled hard fracture callus with resulting deformation of the bone is present at the midshaft. The texture is smooth indicating an advanced stage of healing which precludes interpretation of mechanism or timing of injury. No acute trauma is observed or is able to be distinguished from postmortem damage. This inspection is accredited under the forensic unit?s i50/iEC i 7020 accreditation issued National Accreditation Board. Refer to certificate and scope of accreditation Al? i979. Unknown Report of Anthropology Consultation 7?0854 -4- Pathological Conditions: The mandibular condyles display degenerative changes, likely the result of temporomandibularjoint (TMJ) disease. The etiology of this condition is unknown. Taphonomv/Postmortem Damage: The remains from 7~0854 that were recovered from within the walls ofa house, but extensive postmortem damage is observed. The distal ends of all bones, except the right radius, display evidence of scavenger/rodent gnawing. Several skeletal elements are absent and this may be the result of scavenger activity as well. The bones are dry, greaseless, and odorless, consistent with an extended period between death and discovery. The advanced state of decomposition is consistent with a postmortem interval of greater than one year. identification: 7?0854 is tentatively identified. The left second metacarpal and a virgin tooth (Tooth 7) will be submitted to the University of North Texas (UNT) for DNA comparison to the family reference sample and if it results in a negative match, the DNA profile will be uploaded into The left third metacarpal and Tooth 23 will be retained at in the event additional remains are recovered at a later date and a DNA profile has not been uploaded into This case will be entered into the NamUs and NCIC databases. Summary: 7?0854 is consistent with an adult White/European female, likely over the age of 40 years. Due to extensive postmortem scavenger damage, the stature could not be estimated; however, the overall appearance of the decedent is that of a small-sized female. A well?healed remote fracture of the left femur is present. Bilateral degeneration of the TMJ is observed. The postmortem interval is estimated at greater than one year. Deborrah C. PHD 7 7:3}:00 PM INFORMATION OBTAINED PHONE AGENCY SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION I Upon entry to the attic of the single story residence, a missing set of wooden planks was noted over the location of the bathroom wall. Human skeletal remains could be seen within the wall on the first floor substrate. The remains were accessed after HFD cut a large opening through the sheetrock and shiplap of the bathroom wall. The remains had been disturbed by animal predation, likely rat activity as small rodent bones and rat excrement were visible. The cranium was lying near the east wall of the opening, accompanied by a fragmentary innominate. A rectangular opening, a few inches deep, was located at the east wall. The mandible, both scapulae, several articulated vertebrae. other assorted elements, and a hair pad were retrieved from the rectangular opening. A pair of glasses were also retrieved from the opening and brought to I-ICIFS as property. Two athletic shoes were examined for foot bones but were empty and not retained. Multiple foot and hand bones were loose within the remains. The majority of the remains were present, although not in anatomical relationship. The substrate was scraped to the concrete and the material was brought back to HCIFS for screening and analysis. Any absent elements or portions of elements may have been removed by animal activity or may have fallen under the house into an old crawl space.
