He would like to come to West Virginia as part of that work. We are looking at Charleston, West Virginia for Tuesday7pm range. Perhaps he could meet with the Governor and his Advisory Council, and then go on to see something in the community - perhaps ?rst responders/hospital visit, or a rehab place or a drug He would ?y in very early afternoon, and fly back to DC. that night. Just for context, he did his first trip like this, and visited Aikermes, a pharmaceutical company in rural Ohio that produces one of the 3 approved drug treatments for opioid addiction and also had a drug court judge share his work on this issue. I would like to talk with you and whoever you deem key to involve and brainstorm some ideas for a visit. I'd also like to get a sense of where the Advisory Council is in their work and how active they are - I see that Governorlustice also stood up an Office of Drug Control Policy, so you can help me understand the various roles here. With this visit, we would anticipate some press involvement. For next steps, could we consider the following: 0 Nick could you and I set up a call this afternoon with the right people from our teams joining the line? i can do 2:30 - 3:00, of after 6pm EST. 0 Also, as move forward, we would need main points of contacts for several functions: --Communications Person for our Comma people to coordinate with ?Advance Person -Our Advance person would come early, perhaps this Thursday, so we would need a point of contact for her and security teams ?Point person for me to work with in planning Anxious to talk with you all and ?gure out hast ways to highlight the work being done on this horrible epidemic. Johnston, Darcie Mason, James Bult, Nathan West VA Plan Here is what we are coming back to our West Virginia friends with as a proposed refinement on your good thinking. Look forward to your thoughts, West VA, and of course if my colleagues at HHS want to weigh in, then feel free (specially Cecilia who is there now!) Laura First Some General Notes on Approach for These Visits (Offering Consistency in our Approach Across States) a Location for roundtable listening session is most often at the state capitol. Secretary arrives and meets 1-on-1 with Governor for 15-20 minutes. (Don't worry, we know this does not work in Secretary and Governor Participate in Roundtable Listening Session, no press. 0 Hold Press Event after Roundtable -The real focus for the press conference will be 2-3 individuals in the community impacted by opioids. Governor introduces Secretary, Secretary makes a few comments, and then introduces people impacted by opioids. - When time permits, there may be a second activity involving a site visit of some sort. What we look for in Roundtabie Participants: Heavy on Front Line People Impacted by Opioids - Recovered Addicts Families of addicts, including those who have lost loved ones ER Docs Treatment Docs Rehab Facilities First Responders Drug Court judges Prevention leaders Employers who are leading in helping/ hiring employees with addiction Faith-based representatives who are leading with their congregations in dealing with the epidemic Faith-based and non-pro?t treatment programs 0 Lighter on Elected/Appointed Officials ?There are a plethora of elected and appointed officials in every community who are concerned about this epidemic, who do work on the epidemic, and who have something to say on it and want to be at the table when a Presidential Cabinet member like Dr. Price comes to town. If we are not careful, the "suits" can overtake the meeting and leave less time for the people from the community with the first-person stories. if that happens, it defeats the purpose of the Secretary getting outside the Beltway. We want to be courteous and inclusive with state and federal representatives, local and state health department and cabinet of?cials, mayors, etc. One idea is that if we have a large number in this categOry who 1 want to be involved, they might be in the room for the listening session, but not all of them need to be at the table allowing us to take care that community participants are not crowded out in time for speaking and sharing with the Secretary. Drawing from that West Virginia? Specific Plan (Exact Times For Things Coming With and From Our Advance Person?s Visit) Big Picture: Knowing that Governor Justice cannot be there, we are fine with Secretary Bill Crouch hosting the Secretary on behalf of the Governor. We would like to invite to attend but not have host or lead the Lt Governor Senate President, Mitch Carmichael. Also, we are combining the two listening sessions into one instead, his visit to the Fire Station would be a tour and hearing their stories, would have only one press member along, Eric Eyre, and would allow for some one-on?one time with him. Since we are combining them, we need to cut down the participants who have a speaking role or "sit at the table" in the roundtable, for reasons articulated above crowding out front-line/first person stories. See proposed revisions and let me know what you think.
