Academic Sub-Committee Assessment Calendar August 3, 2017 Recommendation: That the School Board approve the 2017-2018 school year the Assessment Calendar. Description and Background: The Assessment Calendar is a strategically developed calendar to ensure all local, state, and national assessments are administered and reported in a timely manner. The calendar includes all required assessments for the 2017-2018 school year, administration windows, and corresponding grade bands. Based on the feedback from teachers, this proposed assessment calendar reduces district testing to state assessed grade levels and subject areas and those required for teacher evaluations. Gap Analysis: In accordance with MCL 380.1704(b-c), the district must administer a series of summative assessments in grades 3-111 in order to receive state aid.2 The Michigan Department of Education also requires districts to administer additional and alternative assessments for English language learner students and eligible students with Individualized Education Programs.3 In accordance with MCL 380.1249(c), district teacher and administrator evaluations must also take into consideration student growth and assessment data and allow the district to use nationally normed or locally developed assessments. The majority of district assessments that remain on the calendar are associated with required assessments for teacher evaluations. The Assessment Calendar takes into consideration these requirements and the use of formative assessments to inform instruction and the intervention needs of our students. The district has reviewed previous year testing requirements and has reduced the number of required tests, 1 Students in grade 12 who did not take the state required assessments in grade 11 are also required to take the state assessments. 2 Assessments include the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, the Michigan Merit examination, and the College Board PSAT 9 and 10. The Michigan Merit examination includes both the College Board SAT and ACT WorkKeys. 3 Assessments include the World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (“WIDA”), the WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test, and the MI Access. Assessment Calendar Date: August 3, 2017 where possible, and better aligned administration windows to reduce the burden of testing on schools. Previous Outcomes: In previous years, the district has created and published a city-wide Assessment Calendar for teachers, parents, and the community at large. This calendar included all assessments for the given school year, as well as windows for test administration and corresponding grade bands. Expected Outcomes: The district has significantly reduced its testing requirements from 186 to 57 assessments. The attached calendars demonstrate this reduction. For the 2017-2018 school year, the reduction in district assessments was completed by aligning the number of district assessment with the number of state assessments by grade and integration with instruction. The assessment review identified various assessments completed by the district that did not drive instruction in the classroom. The overall number of district assessments has been reduced by nearly 70%. Financial Impact: None.
