QAQSE OF DEATH: Anoxic encephalopathy, days, due to ventricular ?brillation and cardiac
arrest, days, following law enforcement intervention, days.

Contributing Causes: 1) Conducted energy device use. 2) Atherosclerotic and hypertensive
cardiovascular disease. 3) Schizoaffective disorder. 4) History of methamphetamine abuse.

Manner of Death: Undetermined

COMMENT: The cause of death was multifactorial in this dif?cult case. There was an
extremely strong temporal association between law enforcement use of the conducted energy
device (CED) and when the decedent became unresponsive. In those cases where death has been
attributed to use of a CED, ventricular ?brillation occurred within 1-2 seconds and collapse
occurred with 5-20 seconds of use of the device. The heart is most vulnerable to develo ment of
ventricular ?brillation during the wave of the cardiac cycle. The events in this case It with a
scenario of ventricular ?brillation due to CED use very well. He also had signi?cant
cardiovascular disease which increases the likelihood and consequences of ventricular ?brillation
following use a CED. However, lacking an EKG of the event it cannot be said with 100%
certainty that he received the shock during the wave and that the heart rapidly went into
ventricular ?brillation. Further, he had signi?cant cardiovascular disease which in the context of
law enforcement intervention may have triggered an anyway even in the absence of
CED use.

The bizarre behavior due to schizoaffective disorder the decedent exhibited was what required
intervention by law enforcement. His history of methamphetamine abuse most likely contributed
to and exacerbated its severity.
