Clyde River Man In Custody Following Sexual Assault 2017-08-08 On August 5, 2017 RCMP responded to a complaint of a sexual assault wherein a female was sexually assaulted by a male assailant. When RCMP arrived on scene, the assailant attempted to flee. A chase ensued with RCMP apprehending the assailant for short while later. The male has been identified as 21 year old Mark PANEAK of Clyde River, who is well known to police. PANEAK has been charged criminally with Sexual Assault, Break and Enter, and Resisting Arrest. PANEAK will remain in custody until his next court appearance on August 15, 2017 in Iqaluit. A publication ban is presently in place that protects the identity of the victim, however RCMP are providing the following information for the safety of the public. The RCMP wants to remind females to be vigilant and keep safe. “We know women aren't to blame for tragic assaults but we nevertheless want to make sure we’re doing everything in our power to stay safe” said Inspector Dean Warr.    Keep your eyes and ears open and your hands free. It is important to be alert to who and what is around you. Talking on a cell phone or listening to headphones makes you an easy target for  criminals. Also, limit the amount of stuff you carry in your hands by using a backpack, or bag with a shoulder strap.
