ILLINOIS A. Intel Update 1) Former Mississippi Stand member and St Louis area resident, Alex Cohen was arrested Friday for a direct action he took against West Lake Landfill. Alex Cohen recently founded a new activist organization in St Louis called the Earth Defense Coalition. Under this new name, he conducted a successful direct action against the landfill delaying operations and tying up law enforcement for about 11hrs. This action came within two weeks of organizing his new group and resulted in 12 arrests. 2) Alex Cohen’s organizing skills and leadership ability, coupled with his proximity to Patoka and his history of direct action against the DAPL pipeline, makes him a credible threat for direct action at the Patoka pump station. Alex Cohen’s operational security awareness prohibited any forewarning of the most recent action at the West Lake Landfill. Currently, the landfill is where he is focusing his attention and his resources. The perceived success his new organization had at this latest action will further embolden him to increase his efforts and likely expand as the oil pushes into Patoka from North Dakota http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/dozen-people-in-policecustody-after-protest-blocking-two-entrances/article 5343f3a1-8d0c-56dc-a5401db2e5f38733.html 3) Loyola University is the site for a previously reported forum with Water activists from across several states. Chicago Tribune is following pipeline protests nationwide to include Pennsylvania. They have also recently published an editorial siding against pipelines as a means of transporting oil. This interest demonstrates the progressive interests of the Chicago population and the influence activists have within the city’s media outlets. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-bc-pa--pipeline-protest-20170328story.html http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-keystone-pipeline-oiltrump-obama-dakota--edit-0325-lw-20170324-story.html 5) Chicago Tribune today published an editorial piece on DAPL protest and how it will influence future anti-pipeline and environmental protests. PM was in the field and responded to the site for evaluation. The resulting investigation determined that the appearance of a breech was due to a contractor earlier in the day getting stuck in the mud and not an actual breech. DAPL Security’s attention to detail caused enough concern that he followed procedure and contacted the personnel to evaluate. A detailed examination of the L/R and exposed pipe found no damage to the facility. No further action was taken. C.
