Brier synopsis oiyour experience in Wind energy issues: - Wind energy (to me] is a multiiaceted issue that covers all aspects onire, hetlier social, political, financial, etiiotional, etc. i have lived in a comtiiunity that has been strongly divided by an ant ipated industrial wind turbine proiect. Aiter nearly 5 years orbattling the developers and making sure our town has the right leaders and laws in place, i teel our community is slowly healing and we have saved it from industrial wind. There is still work needing to be done and so tiiucli iniormation comes out on a daily basis that it's hard to keep up with this new and ever-changing industry/technology it can be very It's clear that wind power development is sold to a community based on temporary financial incentives onered by developers -- not based on saving the planet or solving our energy dilemma Across the country and in my town, i round that town omcials were paid supporters of the wind (arms and have actually signed land-lease agreetiients. i believe the region where i live is one or the most precious places on the planet the SL Lawrence River and Tliousand islands Region. Some reier this as being a NIMBY - but i say "Never My Backyard is yours" and have a lot oicompany. For years now, there has been a growing tiiovement in the us, Canada, Britain, and Europe, arguing that "[arms" are truly no good (or the environmentor our energy dilemma in reality, the only thing "green" in this business is the developers' subsidized protit paid tor with our tax dollars, and shared with local supporters who have signed land-lease agreemems with developers. without tiiassive subsidies, courtesy oryou and me, wind power simply can't survive Subsidies might be okay iiwind could help replace conventional energy one day, but it can'L As a patron orthis earth, support new and eiricient technologies that will help to satisiy our large scale energy needs, at a reasonable cost and in have to give up MY piece orheaven on earth (tlie beautitul and distinguished 1000 Island's region], then the technology better be eiricient and beneticial to society as a whole. 11. why you are involved in opposing wind energy: - My stemmed from a project that was proposed tor my townsliip that got me to think long and hard about the issue - so the issue hit home' otherwise i probably would be livmg my lite just like everyone else, without the worry oisoo ttindustrial wind turbines towering over my head l"woke up" when i personally witnessed long-time elected leaders in our town acting secretive, not allowmg people to ask questions about a proposed project, and denying respectiul and honest citizens a fair chance to be involved in decisions. Something was very suspicious! Connicts orinterest were prevalent orcourse. As a recent Clarkson University graduate who had taken a tew environmental courses, i can honestly say that was "pm-wind" prior to being part of this local experience, largely due to the social marketing we have all been exposed to and the ract tliat "Green Energy" sounds warm and fuzzy. Who would dare oppose i specially when government leaders are pushing the concept and the average Joe thinks it's a great idea Alter i found out that our town was being infiltrated by a multi-national industrial company, and therefore  thoroughly  researching  the  topic,  it  became  very  clear  to  me  that  “all  that  is  necessary  for  evil  to  prevail  is   for  good  people  to  do  nothing”  –  I  guess  you  can  say  that  I  felt  I  could  make  a  difference  in  our  community  (and  after   4-‐5  years  of  hard  work,  that  is  definitely  the  case;  we  have  replaced  nearly  every  member  of  our  town  board  with   responsible  leaders).    I  felt  that  I  had  the  responsibility  to  do  the  right  thing  and  really  stand  up  for  what  is  truly  a   horrible  energy  initiative  for  our  community,  state  and  nation  on  so  many  levels  -‐-‐Not  to  mention  a  waste  of   taxpayers’  hard  earned  money.     12.    List  any  organizations  that  might  serve  as  a  resource  for  this  group,  in  which  you  are  an  active  member:   • Concerned  Residents  of  Hammond     13.      List  up  to  3  accomplishments  that  you  think  this  new  group  should  achieve  in  the  next  3  months:   • Develop  a  Mission,  Vision,  Group  Name  &  Website  –  Logo  development?      (That  will  ultimately  lead  to  name/brand   recognition)   • Create  a  positive  image  and  “COIN”  a  clear  and  concise  message  -‐-‐-‐  Remember  KISS:  “Keep  It  Simple  Stupid”   • Put  together  a  database  of  contacts  with  all  of  the  anti-‐wind  groups  across  the  country  to  gather  support     14.    List  up  to  3  accomplishments  that  you  think  should  be  achieved  within  the  next  12-‐24  months:   • Consider  creating  a  PAC?   • Boosting  our  presence  through  various  media  outlets:    television  sources,  facebook,  website,  etc.   • Create  a  “Tool-‐kit”  of  information  on  how  to  battle  wind  companies  and  pro-‐wind  forces   • I  feel  I  need  to  have  a  clearer  direction  of  where  things  are  going  before  answering  this  question     15.  Others  might  be  interested  in  the  following  information  about  any  wind  opposition  groups  in  which  you  are  active.         Name  of  Wind  Opposition  Group:     Concerned  Residents  of  Hammond  (CROH)   Location  of  Group:       Hammond,  NY  –  The  Thousand  Islands  Region  in  Northern  New  York   Your  Position:   Past  Secretary;  was  instrumental  in  starting  the  group  in  2008;  currently  take  a   behind  the  scenes  role  in  the  public’s  eye  due  to  my  leadership  roles  within  the   Republican  Party.   #  of  active  core  members/leaders:   5-‐6   #  of  marginally  active  members:     10-‐12   #  of  inactive,  but  supportive  members:              100+  (Mary  Hamilton  is  the  President  and  would  have  hard  figures  for  mailing  list)   Website:         www.CROH.org     Major  goal(s):   To  educate  the  public  about  the  proposed  industrial  wind  turbine  project  that  was   being  proposed  in  our  township.    To  keep  community  members  informed;  bring   light  to  the  conflicts  of  interests  taking  place  on  our  town  board;  to  ensure  a  proper   and  adequate  “wind  law”  was  developed  to  protect  the  best  interests  of  our   community,  including  protecting  the  health,  safety,  welfare  and  property  values  of   all  citizens  &  taxpayers.       16.    Please  feel  free  to  share  anything  else  that  has  not  been  addressed:     Looking  forward  to  meeting  this  new  team  of  people  to  see  where  things  go.    A  concerted  national  effort  is  long  overdue  and  I   believe  it  will  be  extremely  successful  with  the  right  people  involved.    There  is  no  rest  for  the  weary!                                   D.C. Brief synopsis of your experience in wind energy issues: My experience with wind issues started 3V2years ago and involves being president, for the lastZV; years, ofa localgroup opposing wind development We spentcountless hours researching the issue and educating the local citizens about the "real data"behind wind energy, encouraging them to speak out and make changes in the localgovernment Until this summer, we actually believed we had beenfairly successful at achieving ourgoal ofreplacing theformer town board with "enlightened" individuals (3 of5 members in thefirst election] who revised and adopted, with our help, a wind law writtenfor the residenb' and not the wind developer. Unfortunately, the state stepped in and reauthorized legislation that "removed home rule" with regard to the siting ofwind projects and now we may be at their mercy. I then helped to organize a group opposing the loss of"home rule" in NY who is encouraging all town and county officials to oppose this legislation and askfor changes that allows local municipalities to have more involvement in the decision-making process. Because ofthe popularity ofthe sitting Governor and the green-washing ofour culture, our progress has been slower than we'd like, but we are continuing to devise approaches and strategies to reach ourgoal. 11.    Why  you  are  involved  in  opposing  wind  energy:   I  live  in  one  of  the  most  beautiful  areas  on  earth  (1000  Islands/St.  Lawrence  River)…  a  quiet  rural   area  with  a  waterway  and  landmarks  to  die  for.  The  impact  a  wind  project  would  have  on  this  area   would  be  traumatic  and  my  husband  and  I  knew  we  had  to  get  involved  in  order  to  protect  our  home   and  way  of  life.  After  learning  the  real  truth  about  the  scam  behind  the  issue,  we  feel  a  need  to   continue  to  allow  it  to  rule  our  lives  and  are  willing  to  give  of  our  time  to  educate  the  public  for  as   long  as  it  takes  for  the  majority  rather  than  the  minority  of  people  to  see  the  “big  picture”.     12.    List  any  organizations  that  might  serve  as  a  resource  for  this  group,  in  which  you  are  an  active     member:  Citizens  Power  Alliance,  Coalition  on  Article  X     13.    List  up  to  3  accomplishments  that  you  think  this  new  group  should  achieve  in  the  next  3   months:     1)  Development  of  a  non-profit  organizational  structure  that  can  operate  in  a  low  maintenance  way   that  includes  the  hiring  of  a  “director”     2)  Development  of  an  organized  assault  on  the  heads  of  congressional  committees  and  other  relevant   officials  who  most  closely  deal  with  the  extension  of  the  PTC  and  subsidies     3)  Development  of  an  initial  PR  campaign  that  begins  to  enlighten  the  public  to  the  ineffectiveness  of   wind  energy  and  the  burden  it  is  placing  on  ratepayers  and  the  environment.         14.    List  up  to  3  accomplishments  that  you  think  should  be  achieved  within  the  next  12-24  months:   1)  A  continued  PR  campaign  that  has  an  impact  on  the  November  2012  election  process  and   continues  to  challenge  the  effectiveness  of  this  renewable  form  of  energy,  offering  instead  more   effective,  science-based  alternatives  to  the  “green”  bandwagon  everyone  is  currently  riding  on.     2)  Our  efforts  become  part  of  an  international  plan  to  enlighten  and  “un-green  wash”  the  public   when  it  comes  to  wind  energy       15.  Others  might  be  interested  in  the  following  information  about  any  wind  opposition  groups  in   which  you  are  active.       Name  of  Wind  Opposition  Group:  Concerned  Residents  of  Hammond   Location  of  Group:  Hammond,  NY   Your  Position:  President   #  of  active  core  members/leaders:  20   #  of  marginally  active  members:  50   #  of  inactive,  but  supportive  members:  150-200+   Website:  http://www.croh.org   Major  goal(s):   1) Provided  educational  sessions  that  enlightened  the  local  public  to  the  wind  issues   2) Elected  a  majority  of  town  board  members  (in  one  election)  who  understood  the  issue  and   implemented  a  moratorium  on  wind  development     3) Pushed  for  major  revisions  to  the  current  wind  law  that  were  accepted  by  town  board       16.    Please  feel  free  to  share  anything  else  that  has  not  been  addressed:   You  did  a  nice  job  of  developing  the  questions  and  asking  for  the  right  input…  Thanks.               D.C. Brief synopsis of your experience in wind energy issues: Got involved when I attended a hearing in my area for a project 10 miles from my home. What I saw immediately woke me up to the lies and lack of science used to promote this industry. I have been involved ever since. I have traveled to our State Capitol to meet with Reps and Senators, been active holding town meetings and getting info to the papers, and this will be my second trip to D.C. to meet with Reps and Senators. I am also sharing some of the tasks with our state group Illinois Wind Watch 11. Why you are involved in opposing wind energy: I am opposed to wind energy because it is a waste oftax dollars, it is inefficient, it is a scam that is ruining many lives across the world. W/in the next few months. .while my husband [who had earned the island's respect re land use planning issues  dating  back  to  the  early  70s,  among  other  things:-‐)]  galvanized  a  uniquely  unanimous  protest   of  the  plan  by  the  Vineyard’s  elected  officials  at  the  statehouse,  ….our  part  of  the  world  began  to  hear   telling  truths  about  BigWind.     The  Vinalhaven  turbines  went  online  in  November  ’09  with  immediate  repercussions;  their  story   became  available  on  the  web.  Pierpont’s  WTS  published  in  December.  In  early  ’10,  several  Wellfleet   citizens  got  wind  of  the  unimagined  specifics  surrounding  a  5yo  plan  to  put  IWTs  on  town-‐owned  land   w/in  the  National  Seashore.  W/in  a  few  short  months  they  had  researched  and  disseminated  the   truths  of  BigWind,  sufficient  that  the  BOS  voted  unanimously  to  deep-‐six  the  project.     Wellfleet’s  turnaround  was  followed  by  similar  Cape  citizens’  successful  efforts.  In  Eastham,  Orleans   Brewster, Harwich, Dennis, Dartmouth, Wareham, Duxbury - and similarly in towns thru’out the western MA Berkshires Mtns - after careful and informed review, the people said "no." Some, like Falmouth's WindI neighbors never had a chance. Fairhaven is fighting. Scituate seems asleep. Somewhere in early 2010 I saw the Nature Conservancy centerfold picture, with turbines rising from their anchors bored deep into the Kansas Flint Hills, where it happens my Momma grew up, taught in one-room schoolhouses, and where my Daddy is buried. And I knew at the depth of my being that these things were a sacrilege to everything I had ever held sacred in my world. I knew they were wrong, whether on New England ridgelines, California desert-scapes, or now in MA coastal villages. I learned they’d run rampant around the world, and I vowed to work - to take them down, to eliminate them from the face of the earth - until the industry was [a sad and shameful] history. I began a very provincial educational outreach effort in December ’09, equipped with the email addresses of the Selectmen, BoHealth, Planning Boards, Boards of Appeal and FinComms of the 6 island towns; medical professionals and the hospital, school boards, environmental and conservation groups, then added several hundred interested citizens. I sent BigWind facts directly to all those in positions of elected and appointed responsibility, and made it clear I was bcc’ing hundreds more who would hold them responsible for the information I sent and about which they might be legislating. I wrote Op-Eds for the local papers. I persuaded our local film festival to bring Windfall the movie to the Vineyard and put together an invited handout to accompany its screening which I’ll bring to DC, inviting your editorial suggestions prior to its re-printing. I emphatically believe that we do best sending out our points in the most succinct and visually compelling format possible. I don’t care about preaching to the choir. I go for converts! I began to network with the groups who eventually became Windwise~CapeCod, ~MA, ~Fairhaven, ~Duxbury, ~Nantucket, and with others around the country and the world. I’ve spoken at NewEngland environmental forums, MA public hearings, and sent written testimony to the Australian and CT Senate inquiries into the health impacts of IWTs. 11. Why you are involved in opposing wind energy: Knowing what we know, I couldn’t not be. ...I see I have a few lines to fill. Please use this to our advantage: Carl Phillips, a Harvard-trained Ph.D. epidemiologist and professor of public health with outstanding credentials including a 2-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholars in Health Policy Research postdoctoral fellowship, writes that there is “overwhelming evidence that wind turbines cause serious health problems in nearby residents.... There has been no policy analysis that justifies imposing these effects on local residents. The attempts to deny the evidence cannot be seen as honest scientific disagreement and represent either gross incompetence or intentional bias.” Together we must shut these things down. D.C. A larger portion of the job was spent fighting off wind interests. During my tenure we drove the cost of wind RECs from $25 REC down to 5096/ REC. I was forced to negotiate a series of wind power contracts, but was able to limit the volumes and prices contracts to a minimum. 11.
