City Council candidate Shawn P. Dunwoody (Ballot lines: Democratic, Working Families) 1) Do you support the RBTL/Morgan proposal for Parcel 5 Yes/No and why? I do not. This is where the Mayor and 100% agree Rochester is the City of Arts and has been for generations. From the RPO to world premiere plays developed right here at Geva, to Wall Therapy to Writers Books -- one of the leading literary centers in the country to the Jazz Fest, Garth Fagan Dance, Emmy Award winning filmmakers and the Memorial Art Gallery which is on a very exciting track to everything else that happens readings, youth art, the School ofthe Arts, STREET is who we are. This is who I am. And I firmly believe that arts are an economic driver. The creative economy is important to this city and always has been. Creativity innovation progress which equals And I mean no disrespect to the good people at RBTL, but we do not need a bus and truck theater on Parcel 5 to cement our reputation as a City of the Arts. support keeping Parcel 5 as a retail /green space even as an arts venue but as a flexible space where a stage can be set up to support many kinds of performances. With more and more people moving downtown, we need to consider everything that makes a city livable. We need to think about what we have, as much as what we DO have. And retail green space is definitely something we don't have. I hope RBTL finds a location downtown, perhaps on Court Street or Charles Carroll Park, but there are still many, many questions, financing and operating questions. I think the idea that they can depend on parking fees for their solvency is questionable at best. 2) On what topic/issue do you most disagree with the current city administration, and why? On which are you most aligned, and why? Not to keep beating the same drum, but I think the issue I must disagree about is the development on Parcel 5. All in all, I think the city is moving in a good direction. Downtown is alive in a way that it hasn't been for a very long time, we see progress everywhere we look -- and all in all the financial management of the city has been very good. There is always room for improvement of course which brings me to the issue on which I feel most aligned and that would be on the issue of community policing. I think moving back to a quadrant system was the right choice. I think body cameras were the right choice. There is more work to do, but clearly, there is a will in this administration to make meaningful strides toward better policing and I am fully on board with that. Do you support or oppose the proposed redevelopment of Cobbs Hill Village, and why? I oppose. We can all agree that Cobbs Hill Village is in need of repair and upgrades but I don't believe it needs to be at the expense of our senior residents of Rochester. Many ofthe-Village residents feel the improvements would displace from the option of affordable rent. With no legislation being passed yet, we have some time to develop a creative compromise for the Cobbs Hill Village seniors and Rochester Management.
