Hi Chris, I have two emails that have gone out this afternoon. One to parents and one to staff. They are below. If you need anything further, please work with Kori. Thanks, Jenn Markaryan Communications & Community Relations North Kitsap School District jmarkaryan@nkschools.org (360) 396-3004 www.nkschools.org Parent email sent at 1:26pm: We want you to be aware that a former staff member has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor and is currently awaiting trial. The staff member is no longer employed with North Kitsap School District. We understand that news of this sort can be very disturbing for families. The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our highest priority. Please know that the district took all appropriate measures to ensure student safety while the allegations were being investigated. We work to foster an educational environment where appropriate student-staff boundaries are maintained, and we will continue to do so in the future. Any staff member who deviates from their professional obligations in this regard is a disappointment to everyone in the North Kitsap community. Every staff member in North Kitsap has been trained on maintaining appropriate staff and student boundaries and recognizing potential conduct of concern. Every staff member is currently receiving re-training in the 2017-18 school year. We continually evaluate our training to ensure that the message is clear. This process will continue. At this time, we are unable to offer further information specific to the allegations or staff member so as not to interfere with the criminal case. staff email sent at 12:22pm: Good afternoon everyone, We have some news that will be breaking in the press shortly that we want you to be aware of. A former staff member has been charged for sexual misconduct with a minor and is awaiting trial. The staff member against whom the allegations were made is no longer employed with us. This prompts me to remind all District employees that we as a collective group are responsible for fostering a school environment where proper boundaries are maintained between students and District employees. As you know, the District has a specific policy related to maintaining professional staff-student boundaries. Violation of the District’s boundary invasion policy is grounds for discipline, including termination. Please immediately report to your site administrator(s) any time you have reasonable belief that a student has experienced sexual abuse, or if you witness or hear of any other staff member conduct directed towards a student that makes you uncomfortable in your position as a professional educator. As always, the District remains committed to providing a safe and positive educational experience for all of its students and appreciates the support of all its staff members in supporting this commitment. If you receive any inquiries from members of the press, or students or staff with specific knowledge/concerns over possibly related events, please contact me directly. As always, thank you for your continued dedication to the students of our school district, CW From: "Henry, Christina" Date: Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 3:22 PM To: "Markaryan, Jennifer" Subject: Kitsap Sun, request for records Hi Jenn – I am requesting that you copy us on any information about the Carnegie case shared today, Sept. 7, 2017, with parents, staff and/or the community.
