CANTRELL LATOYA WILDER CANTRELL Contact: 9-08-1 7 David Winkler-Schmit 504.913.3453 Mayoral Candidate LaToya Cantrell Satis?es Tax Lien After Now-Defunct First NBC Bank Mishandled Funds NEW Mayoral Candidate LaToya Cantrell announced today that the 2014 lien placed on her Broadmoor home was officially released by the Internal Revenue Service. On August 4, 2017, LaToya Cantrell received a letter from Whitney Bank?s president, Joseph Exnicios, notifying her and her husband, Jason Cantrell, that Whitney would be tendering the funds that were never properly forwarded to the IRS by the now-defunct First NBC Bank. Less than a month later, Whitney fulfilled its assurance that Cantrell?s account would be properly processed. Cantrell now has documentation confirming that the IRS has received full payment. Upon verification that Cantrell?s unpaid balance of assessment was paid in full, the IRS has mailed certificates of release to both Cantrell and Orleans Parish, where the lien was filed and recorded. In 2013, Cantrell and her husband refinanced their home, in part, to pay off the tax debt and repair damage related to Hurricane Katrina. While in process of rebuilding their home, the Cantrells made payments in the refinanced amount to their lender at the time, First NBC, with a portion of their regular mortgage payments instructed to go towards their tax bill. "All that time, we were paying our mortgage at the refinanced amount," Cantrell re?ected, ?but our lender never transferred the [tax] money.? While economic issues continue to affect New Orleanians, Cantrell knows how fortunate she was to be able to resolve this convoluted tax matter as she focused on making the next right decision. Cantrell entered public office to serve those who have not yet found their own footing, or reached solid ground. ?The truth is that lingering Katrina financial complications remain an ever-present issue that impacts many families and small businesses in New Orleans,? Cantrell said of the tax lien. Cantrell is not the only person in this City who relied upon First NBC for disaster relief following Hurricane Katrina, only to suffer financial setbacks. According to an Advocate story published April 28, 2017 by Richard Thompson, First NBC, founded in 2006, was active in structuring and financing tax credit-related projects after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region in 2005. It struggled, however, with accounting issues involving those projects. When First NBC Bank was abruptly ordered closed by state regulators Friday, April 28, 2017, it was acquired by Whitney Bank, officials announced. "Just because I was able to defend myself and fight back, thousands of others still need someone to stand up for their rights," Cantrell said. That is exactly what LaToya Cantrell intends to do if elected.
