The Honorable Betsy DeVos Secretary of Education U.S. Department of Education 400 Maryland Avenue, SW Washington, D.C. 20202 Sept. 13, 2017 Dear Secretary DeVos, As you know, President Trump recently announced his end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provides legal protection for an estimated 800,000 undocumented young immigrants brought into the country as children. In Denver, many of these childhood immigrants, known as “dreamers,” have attended DPS schools their entire lives or are DPS graduates who have built their lives in our community. Our DACA students, many of whom have been in DPS virtually their entire lives, have extraordinary talents and potential to contribute to our community. Our community has already invested much in their education and has so much to gain by fully including them rather than excluding them. In addition, we have a number of highly skilled, very talented teachers in our classrooms who are protected by DACA. Thousands of our children, families and educators now face an uncertain future and possible deportation. As Secretary of Education, we respectfully ask that you convey the importance of this issue and the catastrophic consequences it will have to the President and the Congress. We implore you to use all the efforts of your office to ask the President to reverse his decision and work with Congress to find a humane solution that builds on our country’s history and the American Dream. We are all dreamers, and our country is stronger when it is lifted up by the hopes and dreams of all our people. Best, Tom Boasberg Superintendent Denver Public Schools Denver Public Schools 1860 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203 720-423-3200 info@dpsk12.org dpsk12.org
