An Open Letter to the Administrators of
the University of Manitoba
Dear Administrators or the University of Manitoba, O ce of Fair Practices and Legal Affairs, O ce of
Student Advocacy, O ce of Human Rights and O ce of Human Resources,
We, the students at the Desautels Faculty of Music, are outraged at the University for the way they
have dealt with the incident involving Steve Kirby. The safety of our students has been compromised
and we are concerned as to what the University is doing to further prevent such incidents from
occurring.
We have asked many questions to the University and have not been given proper answers. The
University is refusing transparency on their policies that has allowed an abuser to be in a position of
power for almost a decade, and despite letters of warning and concern allowed him to be promoted. By
hiding information from the students it can only be assumed that the University was aware of the
situation, but was not acting in order to save their image. Had the policies been proactive instead of
reactionary this never would have happened and would not have been allowed to go on for this long.
As students, we have the right to safety within our school, and when this safety is compromised we
demand that proactive action be taken to ensure this never happens again. We are not convinced of the
University’s claims that they will revise their policies in the most effective way and we are dissatis ed
with every answer we have been given thus far. We, the current students of the Desautels Faculty of
Music with support from alumni, teachers, and performers in the Manitoba Music Community demand
that the University admit that this incident never should have happened in the rst place, and to admit
that the University policies protected Steve Kirby until his retirement, unless they can prove otherwise.
