RETRACTION STATEMENT OF VALERIE RILIN AND BRANDI GEORGE We, Valerie Riling and Brandi George, formally recant, withdraw and apologize for statements we made about Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital (?Brooke Glen?) and Universal Health Services which appeared in an article published by BuzzFeed on May 23, 2017. The statements attributed to us in the BuzzFeed article were taken out of context and have no factual basis based upon our experience with Brooke Glen and UHS. On May 17, 2017, we attended a protest rally organized by our union, PASNAP, in front of the corporate of?ces of UHS at their annual shareholder meeting in King of Prussia, PA. Our nursing union has been in negotiations with Brooke Glen for a new collective bargaining agreement. PASNAP organized the rally and contacted various media outlets, including BuzzFeed, in an effort to draw attention to our disagreements with Brooke Glen. A reporter from BuzzFeed, Cora Lewis, attended lunch with us and conducted what we believed to be an off-the?record interview. We believed the purpose of the interview was to discuss our issues with the facility that are the subject of our collective bargaining negotiations. Those issues did not involve patient admission or length of stay matters. Ms. Lewis re-directed the conversation and asked, among other questions, about Medicare billing. We explained to Ms. Lewis that we are not involved in the insurance aspect of patient care and had no information to provide her regarding that t0pic. On May 23, 2017, BuzzFeed published an article about Brooke Glen and UHS based, in part, on that meeting with us. In the article, we were misquoted at times and at other points our statements were taken out of context. However, we truly regret that statements made in the article left the impression that: 0 Brooke Glen was holding patients longer than necessary to collect more insurance money; 0 If patients at Brooke Glen were on Medicare or Medicaid, ?they milk it;? 0 Brooke Glen held patients even though ?there?s no good medical reason to keep them,? and that ?they?ll admit people just to ?ll a bed;? and - Doctors would inappropriately make notes in the medical records to support extended stays for patients. Such impressions are false. We deeply regret having said anything that would have led to these misleading statements published by BuzzFeed. We want people to know that statements we made were not represented correctly. Moreover, these statements are false and are not representative of the quality of care provided by us, the care team, and our physicians at Brooke Glen. We were misquoted by BuzzFeed at times and we realize that our comments may have harmed the reputation of Brooke Glen and UHS. We, as nurses, are proud to provide the excellent care given to our patients at Brooke Glen. We deeply regret that these statements may have undermined the reputation of Brooke Glen and its employees, physicians and management who are intently focused on providing the best possible care and treatment to our patients. We have no information and are unaware of any situation where Brooke Glen management or anyone from the UHS corporate of?ce instructed to keep patients longer for ?nancial reasons or to admit patients who did not meet admission criteria. We have no credible information or evidence to support any contention that patients at Brooke Glen were held longer than they should be for ?nancial reasons. We are also unaware of any situation where a patient who did not meet admission criteria was admitted to the facility. As we told BuzzFeed, we have little knowledge about the Medicare or Medicaid program including criteria for payment or discharge timing and process. Any cements which appeared in the article suggesting that added untrue notes to medical records to justify extending length of stay were also taken out of context. We have never seen anyone at Brooke Glen falsify any medical records to support a longer length of stay. We sincerely regret any harm that Brooke Glen and UHS might have suffered as a result of our statements. We know that the nurses, employees, physicians and management at Brooke Glen value the patients and strive every day to provide high quality healthcare.
