Retraction Statement – Brooke Glen Nurses as Quoted in May 23rd, 2017 BuzzFeed Article October 23, 2017 Dear Ms. Adams and Ms. Lewis, Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital and Universal Health Services view the relationships we have with our patients and the communities we serve as a sacred trust. We are committed to providing quality treatment and care to each and every patient we are privileged to serve. When media reports mischaracterize our quality of care or motivations to serve our communities, we endeavor to reveal the truth and correct inaccuracies for the record. As you know, we have consistently refuted the thesis of your stories regarding the care and treatment provided at UHS facilities and will continue to do so, offering proper context in the interest of accuracy. The reporting regarding Brooke Glen in your May 23, 2017 story was inaccurate. Despite the questionable basis of the allegations about Brooke Glen, the facility and UHS take any such matters seriously. Toward that end, Brooke Glen retained an outside investigative team to thoroughly review the allegations attributed to the two Brooke Glen nurses, Valerie Riling and Brandi George. The investigative team conducted in-depth interviews with nearly two dozen employees and physicians at the facility including 13 nurses, two of whom were Ms. Riling and Ms. George. From the interviews of Ms. Riling and Ms. George alone, it was clear that neither of them were in a position to speak with knowledge or understanding about the issues you were attempting to solicit. In addition, the outside investigators examined voluminous operational, financial and utilization review data as well as actual patient records. The outside investigators further engaged outside medical experts to review a representative sampling of patient records. The investigation took more than three months to complete. The findings from that review revealed that the allegations about Brooke Glen as reported in the story are unsubstantiated, inaccurate and untrue. When the nurses cited as sources in your story were presented with this information, they admitted the statements were not accurate and formally recanted their statements. The signed retraction statement is included as an attachment to this correspondence. Given these developments, we are requesting a correction to your story from May 23, 2017 based upon the information presented herewith. Once again, Brooke Glen and Universal Health Services remain fully committed to providing quality care to our patients. We value our dedicated staff who are passionate about their contributions in making a difference in the lives of their patients. We want to ensure that your readers and the general public understand this, and believe this correction will go a long way toward achieving this goal. Sincerely, Roselle Charlier Vice President, Public Relations and Corporate Communications Universal Health Services, Inc. Cc: Ben Smith, Editor-in-Chief
