Hooser, Vice Chair LETTER IN SUPPORT RE: Hearing Dated Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 2:45 pm Appointment of Katherine Puana Kealoha Director. Of?ce of Environmental Quality Control Conference Room 414 State Capitol 415 South Beretania Street Dear Senator Ron Menor, Senator Gary Hooser, and Committee Members: Thank you for allowing this testimony. I am writing this letter in support of Katherine Kealoha?s appointment to the position of Director of the Of?ce of Environmental Quality Control. I have known Katherine for over nine years, and in that time period, she has dedicated her career and volunteer activities to the preservation of our Environment in Hawaii. I am sure that you are aware that Katherine started the ?rst Environmental Crimes Unit in the Honolulu Prosecutor?s of?ce, and with perseverance and dedication she worked to support many other agencies and community groups to maintain and preserve our natural resources. Her dedication to our Environment has been evident in her cases and her personal volunteer efforts. While handling Environmental crime cases, Katherine chose to work with Environmental groups, our community members, and private industry businesses in each case, to address the Environmental crime at hand, and prevent further crimes and destruction of natural resources through public education and awareness. Given her background and history, she is the best candidate for this position. The Director of OEQC should be balanced in her decisions, and fair to both development and our environment; if anyone can do this balancing act, it is Katherine Kealoha. As an active Community member, Katherine is the President of the Kahala Community Association, where much of her time is spent dealing with residential code compliance issues and public awareness. In addition, Katherine grew up in Kahaluu, and continues to participate in community meetings in her parent?s neighborhood area. As an attorney and member of many Boards and community activities on the outer-islands, Katherine is in touch with a wide range of community groups and grass roots efforts. Katherine 2/20/2008 Page 2 of 2 continues to be an asset to our community, and an avid supporter of our natural resources, cultural values and environmental preservation. As an active constituent, I ask for your support in the appointment of Katherine Kealoha, as Director of the Of?ce of Environmental Quality Control. Given the time and Opportunity, Katherine Will prove that she is the best and most dedicated candidate for the preservation of our Environment. Thank you for your support. Alison L.Y.F.
