All: further to John’s email I attach a mini bio on Professor Joseph Mifsud and some examples of his engagement with the University. Best wishes Bio Professor Misfud is Academic Director, London Academy of Diplomacy, and was formerly foreign affairs representative of Malta and assistant to the Maltese Foreign Secretary. He has significant expertise as a former diplomat and has excellent networks and international connections. He is a member of the International Forum of Diplomatic Training and teaches in the areas of international security, immigration management and on the theory and practice of diplomacy, key areas of international market growth and demand. Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia he co-organises the Annual Global Symposium for Junior Diplomats in Dubrovnik. In addition, he is the UNESCO Hon. Professor in Globastics for Lemonosov Moscow State University. He is on the Board of the London Centre for International Legal Practice (elected position); on the Editorial Board of the Commonwealth Law Bulletin, on the Board of the European Council for Foreign Relations and current chair of the Press Awarding Body for the London Foreign Press Association. Also see www.stir.ac.uk/events/homepageevents/name-122270-en.html Professor Mifsud is a professorial fellow in Arts & Humanities working on: · developing a module on Foreign Policy Analysis bringing in his knowledge on issues of Diplomacy, Security and the World Order that can be listed as part of our offerings for the MSc ICC and DDipl. · developing the content, promotion and support for the new DDipl degree and begin developing a module for this degree. · Contributing to a module and dissertation supervision to the BITD degree in academic session 2015-16. · Giving lectures and masterclasses as part of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Politics, International Politics and International Conflict and Co-operation at Stirling. He has already proven himself as an ambassador for the University of Stirling: · His expertise and connections have been used to develop a number of new initiatives in the Division of History and Politics, including the creation of diplomatic simulations and new courses on diplomatic practice. Professor Misfud brought on board a number of adjunct faculty/senior retired UK diplomats to deliver the training and add value to the courses. · History and Politics is in the early stages of developing a new partnership with the University of Rijeka (Croatia) and the Croatian Foreign Office to deliver a course aimed at building capacity in European governance in the Balkans. It is anticipated that the programme will be ready by summer 2016. The partnership will give Stirling academics a forum to play a key role in a broader European regional development agenda. · He ensured the University of Stirling was represented in the INTO Angolan deal which has led to 10 students. Without Professor Misfud’s interventions the University of Stirling would not have achieved such a good profile with the Angolan Embassy nor have achieved these numbers. · He played a key role in facilitating contacts with the Vietnamese government regarding our co-operation with Vietnamese universities, and supporting the new Masters programmes in Culture, Media and Communication in-country. He regularly “flies the University of Stirling flag” at high profile international events. Examples include: · Attendance of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta (adviser to the Malta PM), November, 2015 · Valdai Board meeting in Moscow (with President Putin, President Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan and President Aliyev (Azerbaijan), November 2015 · Chair of EU Presidency Meeting in Malta, December 2015 · Chair of the Higher education council for the Government of Croatia (appointed external Chair in December 2015 for two years) · Advisor role for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education on Internationalisation as from 1st of December 2015 (six months renewable). · Key Note Speaker on internationalisation for the Santander Rectors Conference in Las Palmas in Spain, December 2015 · Briefing on Yemen - Saudi Intervention (EU Parliament Brussels), January 2016 · Briefing on Brexit (Russian Duma - lower and upper house Foreign Affairs Committee), January 2016 · He chaired the Committee of the Regions annual conference in Brussels, January 2016 · Attended the UN secretary general London meeting, February 2016 · Attendance at the Marrakesh Security Forum, Morocco, February 2016. Subject: Workshop on 13th Colleagues, (cc DPS, Dean Internationalisation, Director DEA, Dean of FAH, Faculty Manager, FAH) Just a brief note to outline the purpose of the informal workshop with ProfessorJoseph Mifsud next week. I know some of you have met him before but this presents an opportunity to explore the opportunities that Professor Mifsud can bring to the University and to each of you as individuals. He has truly global contacts in the world of diplomacy and is on first name terms with a wide variety of ambassadors from across the globe. [Kerry, could you circulate a brief CV to everyone please.7] In his dealings with many governmentrepresentatives, he is often asked to facilitate courses (academic and professional) for diplomats and other government sponsored students from masters level to doctorate, and to provide consultancy on various areas of diplomatic concern energy, human rights, security). In the recent past, his first port of call has been to Stirling and in some cases we have been able to respond positively. However, too often we don't have the 'agility' or capacity to respond quickly enough and the opportunities pass us by. The purpose of this informal workshop is therefore to allow us to explore how best we can respond -- what areas we see as best for us, what types of opportunities suit us best etc. Professor Mifsud will present a range of ideas briefly at the beginning of the workshop and we will then discuss them together. I look forward to meeting you then. ducational
