[1] Walter Eggertson diaries Transcribed by Christine Bone, University of Manitoba Libraries Text in square brackets is supplied by the transcriber. [???] replaces a word which was too unclear to make a guess [?] appears after a word which is not clear, but the transcriber has made a best guess. Non-standard spelling, capitalization anomalies, etc. are maintained in the transcription. The transcriber provides the standard spelling in square brackets, so that it is searchable. The town of Folkestone is mentioned throughout the first diary. In earlier entries, the author spells it Folkstone, but because it occurs so frequently in the text, the author’s spelling is maintained without providing the standard spelling each time. Diary 1 – 1917 Friday May 25th Drilled in morning to 10.00 oclock. We then moved to 11th Reserve quarters on St. Martins Plains. In afternoon were detailed to fatigue duty on our old camp & left there at 5.15 p.m. Had supper at 5.45 up in our quarters. and Immediately after eating there happened something I will never forget as long as I live. We were on blanket parade and had just reached the quartermaster’s stand when I heard a sound, similar to that of a sky rocket, followed by a great clash. However, I did not pay much heed to it. Then a minute later I heard a repetition of this and saw mud & stones flying, and realized what the trouble actually was. Looking up in the air I noticed at first three or four silvery white aeroplanes, which are known as the Kaiser’s white wings or Taubes. Then of a sudden it seemed as if the heavens were filled with these little devils, and I counted no less than 17 of them. Bomb after bomb was dropped and one of these dropp fell about 50 feet from me. Blowing up one hut completely and partly demolishing 2 others. There were many more huts struck also. After the smoke had cleared away no less than 10 soldiers were carried away dead and 19 injured. 7.223 men were among the latter. The toll of the disaster was 74 killed, 176 wounded. Folkstone being the chief victims. From 6.15 p.m. Sat. May 26/17 Parade & muster in morning to ascertain how many were killed & injured. Half-holiday in afternoon; wrote 3 letters.
