State of California Natural Resources Agency Memorandum T0: Region Chiefs Date: July 21, 2017 Assistant Region Chiefs Unit Chiefs Telephone: (916) 653-7772 Contract County Chiefs Deputy Director, Fire Protection Programs Website: Deputy Director, Resource Management State Fire Marshal N. A From: KEN Direc or California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Subject: Fiscal Year 2017-18 Mandatory Fuels Reduction Targets and Activity Reporting As we begin a new fiscal year, want to commend you for the significant amount of work performed in fiscal year 2016?17 to address the prescribed fire, fuels treatment and defensible space inspection targets established last September. You clearly took this challenge seriously. We met 70% of the prescribed fire target, treating 13,941 acres; we exceeded the fuels treatment target, treating 15,755 acres; and we performed 198,871 defensible space inspections, or 80% of the target. These accomplishments show a significant increase in our fire prevention and fuels treatment activities in recent years. The Administration and Legislature recognized the value of the drought-funded resources, and supported the addition of permanent year-round engines. These resources will allow us to continue and further our commitment to these fire prevention and fuels treatment efforts. For the current fiscal year, I am directing CAL FIRE Units and the Contract Counties to achieve the following targets on State Responsibility Area lands by June 30, 2018: . 20,000 acres of broadcast prescribed burning 0 20,000 acres of fuels treatment, including chipping, thinning, pile burning, fuel breaks, etc. . 250,000 annual defensible space inspections . it remains critical that all projects be documented through the process and recorded in All Defensible Space inspection activity will be reported using the new Collector App. This data provided critical information, allowing us to share our activities and accomplishments with the Legislature, the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, and other stakeholders during the year. ?The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection serves and safeguards the people and protects the property and resources of California. 2017-18 Mandatory Fuels Reduction and Reporting July 21, 2017 Page Two I sincerely appreciate the commitment you have all shown in meeting these objectives.
