DENVER POLICE DEPARTMENT NARRATIVE TEXT HARDCOPY 2015-1513649 LETTER TO DETECTIVE - 9999-0 LETTER TO DETECTIVE INFORMATION ONLY LETTER TO DETECTIVE PUTNAM STATEMENT OFFICER STATEMENT On 10/20/15 I was working car 531B. At approximately 1540 hours I responded to a found property call. The caller stated that a gun had been found in the backyard of the house along with a casing. Upon my arrival I met the complainant he handed me a live round the was in a ziplock bag. The complainant stated that he had come over to help his parents clean up their back yard when he had seen "something shiny" on the ground. He was on the southside of the residence near the house next to the chimney and a wood pile. He picked up the object and saw that it was a live round from a gun and looked around. He saw a handgun laying on a pile of firewood. The complainant stated that he had only touched the one round he had found on the ground and called the police. The complainant walked me to the backyard. He pointed to the ground just south of the wood pile that was against the residence where he had found the live round. On the top of the wood pile was a hand gun, black and silver in color. I noticed that the bottom of the magazine was broken out and located the pieces and the spring on the ground. I took photographs of the gun and the magazine parts. Three additional live rounds were found on the wood pile. I put on Nitril gloves to collect the gun. As I picked it up another live round fell out of the gun. All of the items were collected as evidence. While speaking to the complainant I recalled a homicide that had occurred about a month prior just south of the residence in the Crossing Apartments CAD 15-538861. Date of the incident was 09/16/15. After collecting the items I called the Homicide Unit and spoke to Bet Gibbs about the handgun. He asked that I transport the handgun to Police HQ and place it, the live ammo, pieces of the magazine. and the photo disk into the property unit. The handgun had damage to the rear sights and the there was an attempt to scratch off the serial number. The serial number (PDK1570) was still legible. I ran it on the MDT and found that it was stolen out of Douglas County OCA 2013-00060660. Upon my arrival I placed the gun in a gun box and secured it with a zip tie, The metal shaft of magazine was removed from the handgun and it with the pieces of broken magazine were bagged. The handgun and magazine were tagged as "hold for prints." The additional live ammo was separated as to how it was found and bagged. While packaging all of the items I was wearing Nitril gloves. I printed off copies of the photographs that I had For: M08019 Printed On: Sep-26-2017 (Tue.)
