About SUNY Empire State College Empire State College, the nontraditional, open college of the SUNY system, educates nearly 18,000 students worldwide at eight international sites, more than 30 locations across the state of New York, online, as well as face to face and through a blend of both, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The average age of an undergraduate student at the college is 35 and graduate students? average age is 40. Most Empire State College students are working adults. Many are raising families and meeting civic commitments in the communities where they live, while studying part time. In addition to awarding credit for prior college?level learning, the college pairs each undergraduate student with a faculty mentor who supports that student throughout his or her college career. Working with their mentors, students design an individual degree program and engage in guided independent study and coursework on site, online or through a combination of both, which provides the flexibility for students to choose where, when and how to learn. The college?s more than 80,000 alumni are active in their communities as entrepreneurs, politicians, business professionals, artists, nonprofit agency employees, teachers, veterans and active military, union members and more. The college was first established in 1971 by the SUNY Board of Trustees with the encouragement of the late Ernest L. Boyer, chancellor of the SUNY system from 1970 to 1977. Boyer also served as United States commissioner of education during the administration of President Jimmy Carter and then as president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. We have awarded 129 students a total of $92,613 in emergency fund assistance. This is an average of about $720 per student. We will have spent the entire $100,000 Foundation donation by the end of 9/20/2017. We received a $25,000 grant from Barnes Noble (who run our campus bookstores) and have awarded 61 students $25,000 in book assistance which was donated from Barnes Noble. That is an average of about $400 per student. All of the Barnes Noble donation has been spent for students? books and supplies. We have received cash donations from HCC Foundation Board members, employees, and friends of HCC and have released $15,000 (over and above the HCC Foundation $100,000 grant) to provide grants to employees - $250 if transportation or housing lost,- $500 grant if both. We will be able to help between 30 to 60 employees before the funds run out. We would be grateful for any assistance that SUNY can provide designated for students, employees or either to the HCC Disaster Relief Fund. If you were able to provide funds; we would utilize them for immediate relief. For students, they come to Financial Aid, ask for immediate assistance, are triage, and we are able to process funds their student account and they receive a debit card. For employees, they will receive their grants through payroll on our normal upcoming payroll cycles next pay is 10/15 or 10/31. Here are some facts for your consideration: Many Houston Community College (HCC) faculty, staff and students are struggling to put their lives back together. For some, this is an insurmountable process that will take many months, if not years. HCC Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado stated it best when he said, ?Every day I am hearing of our family members who have been displaced along with many of our family members who have gone above and beyond to help our community. Harvey may have dealt us a punch, but it has not knocked us down. We are standing strong together.? The HCC Foundation has established the HCC Disaster Relief Fund to assist employees and students due to financial hardship caused by natural disasters, such as Hurricane Harvey. This fund will exist over time to assist immediate and future needs of HCC employees and students. The HCC Disaster Relief Fund will be'ongoing. We know that the need will be high and continue to be high for years to come as a result of the damageexperienced by so many in Houston and the surrounding region. Harvey Impact on Students: I 5,500 students have responded to HCC student impact survey 10% response rate is very good. I The demographics of those who have responded is reflective of our general student population I 40% of those responding have transportation concerns (half of which have family and friends who are now more dependent on them). I 50% of those responding have housing issues (with 22% of the total population living in a home with flood damage, 8% of the total population are living with family and /or friends) I nearly10% of the students responding are either unsure if they can return to class this semester or will not be returning of those students, 70%+ have financial concerns and 50%+ have transportation concerns impacting their decision. 4 I 35% of student responding have either lost their job or had their work hours cut as a result of the storm. Harvey Impact of Employees: I Of 6,000 employees; 20% have lost their cars, homes or both. I Additionally, even if an employee didn?t experience personal loss, they have had to take in family members who did experience loss of their homes, cars, or both. HCC and the HCC Foundation will provide periodic updates of how donations are being utilized and the impact of donations received. We want to share with our donors the stories of individuals and families whose lives will be forever touched by your giving. 100% of all donations to the HCC Disaster Relief Fund will benefit students and employees. HCC classes for the fall semester started on September 11th against a backdrop of uncertainty for what the future holds for many here in the nation?s fourth largest city; with your support, we can help pave the road to recovery through education and a helping hand when most needed. Our goal is to provide some measure of help to all HCC employees and students impacted by the storm we know the need is great and the generosity of all Houstonians is even greater! From: Keneston, Emily Sent: Wednesda ,Se tember 27 2017 10:06 AM To: Cc: Fitzgibbons, Christine Subject: HCC Relief Efforts Good morning- Apologies for the delay in response, thank you for calling me back on Friday! I was hoping you could provide some information about Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. As I noted in my message, SUNY ran a small campaign to raise money for hurricane relief. The intention of the funds is for immediate relief efforts, not necessarily long term grant processes that may take a few months. From what I found on the website, it looks like the foundation at HCC has a fund for students to apply for grants. Are there any immediate relief efforts going on through your organization at this point? Thanks for any information you can provide!
