This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of Bet El. This bastion of the spirit of Judaism and Zionism in the heart of the land of Israel represents the ultimate realization of Torah-true values and sel?ess commitment to the Nation. It is you, our dear guests and supporters, who are responsible for this progress. We congratulate our honorees tonight, all of whom are splendid and natural extensions of this altruistic ideal and total dedication that permeates the Bet El community and its institutions. Our Shomer Eretz Yisrael Awardee, Dr. Joseph Frager, is one of Israel?s leading advocates in the United States. Dr. Frager has successfully lobbied both local politicians and Capitol Hill on behalf of Israel, and he has led countless tours of Israel for numerous American political leaders. Dr. Frager organized the Annual Israel Day Concert in Central Park for the past twenty-five years, and he writes a popular blog on Arutz Sheva. Dr. Frager is a member of the board of the American Friends of the Bet ElYeshiva Center, the board of the National Council onoung Israel and Chairman of American Friends of Ateret Cohanim. My heartfelt congratulations go to our Bet El Builders Medallion Awardee, Laurie Moskowitz Hirsch, on behalf of her parents, Dr. Irving, z?l and Cherna Moskowitz. The Moskowitzes were among the first supporters of the Gush Emunirn movement to settle the newly?liberated regions of Judea and Samaria after the Six-Day War, and they have long played a vital and integral role in the building, reclaiming and settlement of Jewish neighborhoods and towns throughout Eastern Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, including our beloved Bet El. My best wishes to our Keter Torah Awardees Mechel and Sima Lieber. Mechel and Sima are strong believers in Bet El and its Institutions. Their activism and leadership have greatly benefited their Flatbush community. Sima is active in the Sister-to-Sister organization, providing friendship and support to women who are, or are in the process of getting divorced. Mechel dedicates several nights a week studying with unaffiliated Jews in the ?Partners in Torah? initiative, helping them along their journey towards mitzvah observance. It with a heavy heart that I mourn, with all assembled here tonight, the untimely passing this past September of NYS Michael Simanowitz, z?l, the son of our dear friends and longtime officers Sheila and Sherman Simanowitz. Michael worked behind the scenes in numerous capacities to ensure the success of our dinner for these past many years. His smile, generosity, reliability, perseverance and keen insight are sorely missed. On behalf of my wife Jean and myself, I would like to share with you why Bet E1 it is so important to us. There have been, throughout history, events and places that have taken on enormous historical significance, and Bet E1 is such a place. It has grown from a small group of trailers placed on a barren tract of land four decades ago into a center of Torah learning and a thriving community. It stands as a beacon of light, and is a forceful statement that Israel will never again allow others to threaten its independence and well?being. We believe, with all our hearts, that Israel?s survival depends on the development of cities like Bet El, and on brave men and women of vision and faith. The heroic effort of the builders of Bet El could not have been achieved without the genuine love and support of all of you. With our continued interest and encouragement, the dreams and visions which we have for them will become the promise of a glorious future. Sincerely, Eugen Gluck Dear Friends, It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you this evening, as we celebrate the 35th Annual Dinner of American Friends of Bet El. For four decades, Bet El has stood as a pillar of Jewish life in the Shomron.Your support this evening sends a clear message to our brothers and sisters in Bet El and throughout Eretz Yisrael that they are not alone. Last Shabbat we read, in ParshatVayetzei, onaakov's dream at Bet El. G?d stood aboveYaakov and promised to give him and his descendants all the land he was lying upon:? the ground upon which you are lying, to you will I give it and to your descendants.? Yaal
