Politics began early in 1986 in Cobb County with west Cobb Republican
Earl Ehrhart announcing his candidacy for the state legislature post held
by Democrat Steve Thompson. Ehrhart, 26, is seeking his first elected
office although he has been active for years with the Cobb County
Republican organization.
In a prepared announcement, Ehrhart, a bachelor, said he has filed with
the State Department of Georgia his formation of a campaign committee to
seek the state House office.
Thompson, also a bachelor, could not be reached for comment, but he is
also expected to seek re­election to the state legislature in the fall election.
A graduate of the University of Georgia majoring in both political science
and business, Ehrhart has lived in Cobb County since 1964. A native of
Miami, he currently resides at 3281 Lancer Dr. He is the son of Earl
Ehrhart Sr. of Smyrna.

Ehrhart is political education director of the Cobb County Young
Republican Club and amember of the Cobb County Republican Executive
Committee. He was an ac tive volunteer in the Reagan/Bush campaign
and coordinated the Seventh District effort in the recent Mattingly
campaign kickoff.
As vice president of The Marble Craftsman, a family owned business,
Ehrhart said he has the background to apply sound business principals to
state government.
An active member of the Georgians for Victims Justice and the Cobb
County Victim Witness Assistance Unit, Ehrhart said "It is time we start
worrying about the rights of victims of crime and not the criminals.
"It's wrong when we release hardened criminals into the community just
because we don't have a place to put them. There's got to be a better way
to handle criminals than putting them back on the street to prey upon the
community again."
Ehrhart's chairman is Chuck Ward, director of the Medical Child Care
Center in Cobb County.
He is a member of St. Jude's Episcopal Church.
