PO. Box 2206 Austin, TX 78768 Phone: 512.477.9821 Fax: 512.480.0709 REPUBLICAN PARTY OF TEXAS James R. Hickey, (ihnirman Commissioners Court Administration Building 411 Elm Street Dallas, TX 75202 RE: Dallas County Sheriff Replacement Dear Commissioners Court: It has come to my attention that Lupe Valdez is continuing to serve and act as Dallas County Sheriff despite having resigned from the of?ce under the standards set forth in the Texas Constitution. By copy of this letter, I am asking the Dallas County Commissioners Court to immediately take the steps necessary to appoint a replacement sheriff to ensure that the citizens of Dallas County are kept safe and secure. Article XVI, Section 65(b) of the Texas Constitution provides that a sheriff who becomes a candidate for another of?ce automatically resigns his or her position if at least one year and 30 days remain in the sheriff?s current term. Sheriff Valdez was elected in 2016 to a four?year term, expiring in 2020. Per public reports (attached), Valdez has said she is a candidate for Texas Governor. Therefore, both prerequisites are met (over 3 years remain on her term and she has announced her candidacy for office), and she has automatically resigned her position as sheriff. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, James Dickey Chairman Republican Party of Texas The following media outlets reported yesterday that Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez is exploring running for Governor: 11/29/2017 -- CBS DFW 11 "The Dallas County Democratic Party Chair Carol Donovan told C8511 Wednesday afternoon that Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez has turned in her resignation to Judge Clay Jenkins effective December 8 and will run for governor."
