ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD RESOLUTION NO. 62-17 The following resolution was offered by seconded by : A resolution supporting the engagement of a consultant to make well-researched, strategic policy reform recommendations to improve the experience of students and parents with school transportation and school enrollment. WHEREAS, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) strives to be responsive to the concerns of the citizens we serve, and to continually improve the quality of educational experience offered to all our students and families; WHEREAS, over the past several years, several common themes have resonated in numerous public settings, including town hall meetings, neighborhood meetings, the OPSB citywide survey, school board meetings, etc. Many of these concerns from our community center on topics related to our school transportation and common enrollment systems. Specifically, the most common points of feedback from our community regarding school transportation and enrollment have included, but are not limited to, the following suggestions: • Students should be able to attend a school that is within walking distance of their home; • Students should be able to attend a school where their sibling(s) have already been enrolled; • Students should not be riding on buses for lengthy periods of time; • Students should not be at the bus stop too early in the morning, or too late at night; • Students should not be sitting on the bus after arriving at school for long periods of time; and • School buses should have air conditioning. WHEREAS, as a result of community concerns, OPSB wishes to engage a consultant to make well-researched, strategic policy reform recommendations to improve the experience of students and parents with school transportation and school enrollment. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orleans Parish School Board hereby directs its Superintendent to engage a consultant to make well-researched, strategic policy reform recommendations to improve the experience of students and parents with school transportation and school enrollment; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Orleans Parish School Board hereby directs its Superintendent to present said recommendations to the School Board by no later than the June 2018 business meeting.
