Bald Eagle Trips Along the Delaware River Though you may not think of New Jersey as a great place to view these magnificent birds of prey, it actually is, and winter is the perfect time to spot them. Each winter, bald eagles congregate along major waterways, including the Delaware River, to fish the open waters all season. At this time, it’s easy to find eagles soaring overhead or diving into the icy waters for prey. With knowledgeable staff, travel by van to locations along the Upper Delaware River in New York and Pennsylvania. Blackburn Scholarship Dr. Blackburn’s contributions to the Morris County Park Commission are celebrated every year with the giving of a scholarship in his name by The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum. This year’s Benjamin Blackburn Scholarship Lecture, on Saturday, February 3, at the Haggerty Education Center of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, is presented by Ken Druse, author of the best seller, The Natural Shade Garden. Dr. Blackburn taught botany at Drew University, authored numerous books and papers on horticulture and hosted a popular radio program for many years. His work at facilities of the Morris County Park Commission, Willowwood Arboretum, and his counsel on the development of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum were important contributions to the continuing legacy of beauty at these properties. It is fitting to honor his memory with a talk, The New Shade Garden: Creating a Lush Oasis in the Age of Climate Change, that plumbs the depths of shade. The low-stress environment of shade, cooler temperatures, fewer water demands, and carbon sequestration, is extremely beneficial for our plants, our planet, and us. Ken details new ways of looking at all aspects of the gardening process in topics, such as designing your garden, choosing and planting trees, soil conservation, critter issues, and discovering the vast array of flowers and foliage suited to the challenges of a warming planet, shrinking resources, and new weather patterns. Ken knows that the best defense is to create a verdant retreat. Proceeds from this lecture benefit the Blackburn Scholarship, currently offered to students of the Landscape Technology program at County College of Morris. Please register by January 28. The cost for this program is $30 for members of the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and $35 for nonmembers. This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s. The snow date for this program is Sunday, February 4. For information and/or to register, please visit arboretumfriends.org. Travel back in time to the turn of the last century when travel around Morristown was by horse and carriage. It was a period of time when grace prevailed, and the bond between horse and its owner was delightfully special. Matilda Frelinghuysen, the owner of the grand estate known today as The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, enjoyed being transported in lovely carriages pulled by her selection of horses. Join us this year with your favorite young person at the annual Matilda’s Tea to celebrate all things horses. On Saturday, February 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, enjoy the finery of delicious teas and a brunch while you discover who and how the horses were cared for. Take a tour of Matilda’s carriages, and make a horse craft. Best of all, weather permitting, take a horsedrawn wagon ride around the property, just as Matilda once did. You can even meet and pet the Morris County Park Commission’s own Park Police horses. Space is limited, so preregistration is required. The cost is $35 per person. Snow date of Sunday, February 18.
