Position: BLC’s San Diego office is looking for a part-time (20-30 hours per week1) associate-level attorney with one to four years of litigation experience who is interested in and committed to public-interest issues. The job involves heavy research and writing combined with administrative and courtroom proceedings, including trials and writ hearings. The ideal candidate will be available to start immediately. (BLC may consider candidates who are awaiting bar results but have not yet been admitted to practice.) Desired Qualities: The successful candidate will have the following qualities: (1) course work and good grades--or equivalent work experience--in (a) administrative law, (b) government-transparency law, (c) landuse law, and (d) environmental law or housing law or poverty law or transportation law or a similar publicinterest field (note that land-use law and environmental law are NOT the same thing); (2) ability to work independently; (3) excellent public-speaking skills, excellent writing skills, excellent legal-research skills; (4) a deep desire to dedicate one’s professional career to public-interest legal work; (5) a willingness to challenge the status quo and advocate for causes that are not always popular with everyone; (6) a clear understanding that public-interest work has many rewards that make up for what the work otherwise lacks in monetary rewards; (7) a history of community involvement; and (8) has taken the California bar (though it’s not necessary to have received results or admission yet). Applicants may be asked to demonstrate that they possess these qualities. Non-Profit Employment Credit: If it is helpful to the successful candidate to be officially employed by a nonprofit organization (e.g., to receive student-loan forgiveness), it may be possible to have the successful candidate employed by a non-profit but overseen on legal matters by BLC. Compensation: Starting compensation will be consistent with public-interest positions for legal professions with qualifications and experience comparable to the applicant’s. The long-term compensation structure will be discussed with applicants selected for an interview. Submission Requirements: Applicants must send a cover letter, resume, and three writing samples to “keri@briggslawcorp.com” with “Job Opening” in the subject line. The cover letter must (i) confirm that the applicant satisfies each of the eight criteria listed above for a successful candidate or explain which of the criteria is not satisfied; and (ii) specify salary requirements numerically (i.e., tell us the number). The writing samples must include, at a minimum, a legal research memo or court brief (even if written only for law school), and all samples must be law-related. ALL MATERIALS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ADOBE PDF FORMAT. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will not be considered. Interviews: They will begin immediately and occur on a rolling basis until the position is filled. 1 The position may convert to a full-time position in approximately six months, but this is not guaranteed.
