Dear Norm:
Thank you for your letter announcing your retirement from the Board of Regents as of February 16,
2018. After so many years you deserve a break.
I want to express my deep appreciation for the years of service you’ve given to the University of
California, particularly in connection with the management of the national laboratories. We will
miss that experience as well as your deep understanding of the issues facing higher education in
general.
Few people understand the enormous responsibility we undertake in connection with our national
labs, and for so many years you have been the University’s point person. Thank you for that
service. I do agree that having Regent Ellen Tauscher on board will make for a seamless transition.
The Board very much appreciates your willingness to continue to assist in the transition we had
planned between now and February 16, when Regent Tauscher will become the chair of the two
LLC’s managing the labs per our understanding earlier this year.
Notwithstanding your departure from the Board, I expect our friendship will continue, as will the
deep relationships you’ve built with so many other Board members as well as members of the
University community. And, as you’ve reinforced many times, I know you will always be there for
the University when called upon.
