Date: January 9, 2018 Subject: Landslide Monitoring Columbia AK Anderson Quarry Parker, Washington 2642 This memo is an update to prior memos released in December 2017 and January 2018, and includes manually-collected GPS data from January 8, 2018. Executive Summary The main slide mass is moving at a rate of 1.5 to 1.6 feet/week. The acceleration observed in today’s data indicates the slide is currently experience slight acceleration at approximately 0.1 feet/week/week. The acceleration decreased slightly on or around December 20, which changes the current Inverse Velocity projection for a large event to March or later. The southwest ridge appears to be providing some resistance since it is not deforming as fast as the main slide mass. These projections are based on approximate extrapolations of current data; however, trends can change and will be addressed with subsequent monitoring. GPS Monitoring The GPS monitoring method currently deployed at the Columbia AK Anderson quarry uses a Topcon GR-3 base and rover with a FC-5000 data collector. Columbia personnel walk to survey hubs to measure their positions, with data for each hub being collected in less than one minute. Informational background on the hubs is provided in a December 15, 2017 memo. GPS data acquired on January 8 includes Groups A through G. A site topography map, generated from the January 3, 2018 flight by Columbia, with an orthomosiac image of the ground surface and the baseline location of the survey hubs, is provided on Figure 1. Also shown on the map is an outline of the observed limit of ground deformation. The hubs are separated into 11 groups to represent portions of the landslide and surrounding area, as listed in a table on the following page. The hub Group C.M. (Central Mass) consists of select hubs that have been providing relatively consistent GPS data, without lateral and toe effects of the deformation. Therefore, these hubs are interpreted to represent activity of the main portion of the slide. Monitoring Results Monitoring results from Monday January 8 for hubs in Groups A through G have been updated in the charts provided as Appendix A. The landslide continues to gradually increase in movement and velocity. As of Wednesday January 3, the average rate of movement for the two hub Groups Central Mass and G are listed below:  Central Mass 1.5 feet/week  Group G 1.6 feet/week The acceleration observed in today’s data indicates the slide is currently experience slight acceleration at approximately 0.1 feet/week/week. Evaluation of Monitored Slide Movement For predicting future movement, average displacement and velocity for the Central Mass and Group G hubs are graphed as Charts A and B on the attached sheets A-1 and A-2. Monitoring results from the rebar hubs have been relatively consistent with some scatter, which allows for plotting the simple average of the group data. Slide movement acceleration for the average group data is also plotted on Chart D (see sheet A-1 and A-2). A tool that we are using to predict a possible large slide movement event is a plot of the inverse of the slide movement velocity (Sheet A-1 Chart C for the Central Mass Average, and Sheet A-2 Chart C for the Group G Average). The trend of the inverse velocity with time is a sloped line that appears to be converging on the time axis of the graph, indicating a mass movement event may be imminent. January 9, 2018 2 Cornforth Consultants, Inc. 2642 The procedure for analyzing the raw GPS data has been modified to reduce the effect of random errors in the measurements. This change will mean that the data presented in the summary plots (Charts A, B and D on Sheets A-1 and A-2) and the group data plots (Sheets A-3 through A-14) will differ slightly. The change is related to the way that dates and times are handled in the formulas, as well as the processing step at which averaging is performed. The summary Charts A, B and D will include displacement, velocity, and acceleration measures that are internally consistent. Individual monitoring points will still be evaluated to identify trends of local movement or areas requiring additional scrutiny. The data analysis for Central Mass and Group G indicates these slide areas are experiencing a segment of near constant acceleration initiating on or around December 20. These segments are shown with individual trendlines on Chart C, which project an event in March or later, if the landslide conditions remain the same as they apparently have been since December 20. Due to scatter in the data, trendlines of movement based on the fastest and slowest hubs in the groups are also plotted. However, we are also anticipating the landslide conditions may change; therefore, we are maintaining a broader interpreted range at this time, shown to indicate a projected range between mid-January and May. The current interpretation of movement indicates that the main slide mass may be experiencing some resistance against the southwest ridge. Since December 20, surface expression of cracks evident in the lidar and other imagery indicate the slide may be bypassing the furthest extent of the southwest ridge. Further monitoring and interpretation is necessary to determine if current trends continue and the potential for changes in behavior if the southwest ridge experiences additional shear movement. Interpretation is also being performed on the GPS data from the southwest ridge and the portion of the main slide mass that is upslope of the southwest ridge (Group F).
