As you know, on March 2, 2017, the Attorney General recused himself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for President of the United States. The regulation on which the Attorney General based his recusal applies to investigations and prosecutions. See 28 CPR. 45.2. Additionally, on May 17, 2017, the Department of Justice (Department) announced the appointment of Mr. Mueller to serve as Special Counsel to oversee the previously-con?rmed FBI investigation of Russian government efforts to in?uence the 2016 election and related matters. We are con?dent that the Special Counsel will carry out his responsibilities appropriately and in accordance with the Department?s Special Counsel regulations. See 28 CFR 600.4 through 600.10. Under these circumstances and consistent with the Department?s longstanding policy regarding the con?dentiality and sensitivity relating to pending matters, the Department is not in a position to respond further to your inquiry at this time.
