Civic Action Tracker: 2017 Data gathered by New Yorkers for Parks January 1, 2017 - December 31st, 2017 In the year 2017, at least 640 civic actions occurred in New York City’s public spaces. protests die-ins rallies pray-ins marches faux funerals dance parties sit-ins city parks public plazas transit hubs streets sidewalks Over 647,000 people participated in these civic actions. That’s equivalent to 8% of New York City’s population, or about 2 out of every 25 New Yorkers. The places New Yorkers are using for their civic actions are critical parts of our public realm. Streets, sidewalks, parks, plazas, and other places support the public’s right to free assembly.
