From: American Red Cross Sent: Thursday, February 1, 2018 8:13 AM To: All Employees - Biomed ; All Employees - Chapter ; All Employees - NHQ Subject: Message to Employees: Important Personnel Changes Distributed to: All Employees The following message is from Gail McGovern, President and CEO: Dear colleagues, I know the last few days have been difficult for many members of our American Red Cross family, and I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who reached out to me, your managers, HR, or any of the other available resources at the Red Cross. We value receiving your input, and I am truly thankful to those of you who brought forward issues, voiced concerns, offered support, and provided feedback. I want to assure you that my leadership team and I have taken everything you have told us very seriously. Given the recent news story about the departure in 2012 of a Red Cross employee following allegations of sexual harassment – and the communications associated with that employee’s departure – David Meltzer, General Counsel and Chief International Officer, has chosen to resign from the American Red Cross to ensure nothing interferes with the organization’s ability to effectively carry out its important mission. David has worked for the American Red Cross for almost 12 1Ž2 years, and I am thankful for his service. David has asked to share his letter of resignation with you, and it is available here. Over the course of the last year, we have seen news accounts of other organizations and institutions contending with serious instances of sexual harassment and the harmful repercussions that such misconduct can create. Last week, it was our organization’s turn to again struggle with these issues. I am proud that in 2012, management recognized the seriousness of the allegations and took swift action against the employee who had committed the misconduct. But I also recognize that communications surrounding those allegations fell short. I am committed to moving forward in a way that strengthens us as an organization. I also want to take this opportunity to announce these organizational and personnel changes: • • Effective immediately, Craig Mendelsohn will serve in the role of Interim General Counsel and report directly to me. Craig first joined the American Red Cross in 1997. He left for a period of time to serve in executive positions in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, but he returned in 2008 and is now serving as Deputy General Counsel. Craig has been a valued member of the legal team with a number of accomplishments, most notably helping the American Red Cross vacate the Amended Consent Decree with the FDA. In addition, the International Services Department and Jono Anzalone, VP, International Services, like our other lines of humanitarian service, will report directly to Sherri Brown, President, Humanitarian Services. In closing, I want to again express my heartfelt sympathy to anyone who has experienced sexual harassment anywhere. I am committed to re-doubling our efforts to ensure the American Red Cross is a safe and inclusive workplace where employees can focus on our important work, and I want to reiterate once again that you can always reach out to me at any time at gail.mcgovern@redcross.org. As always, thank you for all that you do to support our lifesaving mission. Sincerely, Gail
