This would forever destroy one of Seattle?s major cultural icons, the intersection of First and Pike streets. Standing under the Pike Place Market sign, watching the famed fish-throwers and listening to the street musicians playing next to the brass pig would not be the same with a modern building looming in view only a block away. The market entrance, as featured on so many postcards and souvenirs, would be irreparably damaged. The proposed 14-story tower would be a monstrous blight on the Pike Place Market. No new building, however well- designed, would give the same experience, not even if the new building were only the same height as the Hahn building. The appearance and scale of the historic Hahn building are in proportion to the Market and other buildings at the intersection. The design of the proposed building is under review by the City of Seattle. Comments can be emailed by Monday to prc@seattle.gov, attention: #3028428 103 Pike Street. Alice Winship, Seattle, president of the Association of King County Historical Organizations I agree with Alice Winship. This is a bad idea. I agree with the Association of King County Historical Organizations that a 14 story building at this location, where the current building is only a few stories, will radically change the look of the Pike Place Market. This is one of the most iconic areas in Seattle, and as most of the city undergoes rapid change, it's especially important to preserve the views and attractions that give the city its character. This project is a slap in the face to the Market community, preservation activists, and to Seattle?s roots. The existing building is a cohesive part of the market as any building because of its strategic location at the iconic intersection. The project fails to recognize the roots of the site, and does not visually transition the new highly urbanized downtown Seattle with the historic Pike Place Market neighborhood. This project must have Victor Steinbrueck must be spinning in his grave. In the 19605 Seattle leaders proposed tearing down the Market to construct? a new hotel/convention complex. That project also made a lot of sense economically, but that completely misses the point of preserving our heritage. Prof Steinbrueck organized the THE movement which went up against city leaders and prominent architects. He inspired student activists like me to the cause. I?d be out there again demonstrating with signs and banners to save this important visual gate to the Market. In the fifteen years officed in the Market, this building remains as much of a memory as any other. It provides one of the few surviving links to early First Avenue as well as the to the Market. A minimum solution would be to preserve the perimeter facade of the existing brick building. An example of facade preservation is the terra cotta facade of McKay Ford building that has been incorporated into the new building design at Westlake and Mercer. This proposal is a bad idea that would destroy a significant element of the Pike Place Market. Mark von Walter Architect Dela Cruz, Jeff From: Sent: To: Subject: Hello! Greetings, I have just learned about a proposal to demolish the old Hahn Building, which is part of the historical neighborhood and approach to Pike Place Market. The Market is one of Seattle?s most valuable treasures, visited by most tourists in the city, and considered by locals to be an important part of the city?s heritage. To demolish the three-story Hahn Building would be yet another step toward erasing Seattle?s unique architectural identity, making it more ofan Anywhere-USA. Worse than that would be the building of a tall building so near the market. One of the exciting things about the Market is the effect of weather on its environment. Just look at artists? depictions of the Market. Many images show people with umbrellas, but some stunning views show sunshine and dramatic shadows amid the plantings that grow one level up along the perimeter. Please consider this unique area carefully before making any decision to tear down and replace more ofour history. Thank you, Sally M. No. I write this with pain in my heart. I have watched our city devoured by developers with no sense of history or preservation or sense of scale or making new buildings blend in with the existing regional architecture. I understand the need for densification but I also understand the need for identity and a sense of place. There is nothing more Seattle than the Market. We have watched our views disappear, beloved landmarks disappear visually if not physically, and the market would be the last straw. Every large city is turning into Anywhere, USA.
