Media Response August 1, 2016 Contact: Koko Mackin 205-220-2713 Birmingham, AL – Due to lack of strong clinical and scientific evidence, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama will continue to not cover the type of artificial pancreas treatment (APT) provided by Trina Health or other similar providers. APT is not covered by Medicare or any other major third party insurer. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued “non-coverage” notices on the procedure for this particular treatment. The American Diabetes Association and major medical specialties including ophthalmology, nephrology, and endocrinology have not published any statements validating the effectiveness of this form of artificial pancreas treatment provided by Trina Health or other similar providers. Additionally, there is currently insufficient medical evidence to show improvement patterns in patients. For these reasons, Blue Cross opposed House Bill 415. Blue Cross is continually open to reviewing clinical data regarding treatments, and we remain a strong supporter for diabetes prevention, research and treatment. Our company will continue to provide our members with helpful resources on awareness, as well as access to quality healthcare.
