Dear Palmer Park Preparatory Parents and Teachers, I want to share with you an update on the roof replacement project at your school. After my last visit with Board Vice Chair Peterson-Mayberry, I directed our Facilities Department to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the replacement of the roof. Based on the district’s meeting last week with roofing contractors, we are hopeful to receive positive responses to the RFP that will allow the roof replacement work to begin as soon as this spring. In the meantime, we will take steps to ensure that your students and our staff are placed in the best environment possible. This means we will relocate classrooms – moving students from classrooms where there is evidence of water intrusion. In fact, this work has already begun and on last night, after walking the building, our Environmental Health and Safety Department decided to relocate classrooms 5 and 10 as early as this morning. Also, over this weekend we will have an environmental contractor working to remove ceiling tiles and treating select areas that have been impacted by water. Finally, because there has been an allegation of mold, we will begin testing the building for mold and will remove any such mold, if it is found. Please know that we are committed to making facility improvements in the school and will continue to keep you updated on our progress. If you have questions about the process, please contact Felicia Venable, Sr. Executive Director of Operations at 313-873-6532 or via email at felicia.venable@detroitk12.org Sincerely, Nikolai P. Vitti, Ed.D. Superintendent
